The 2018 Christmas memo

Dec 10, 2018 21:42

Ed. note: This is the Christmas memo going out in my Christmas cards this year. If you're not on my IRL friends list -- or even if you are -- please accept my Merriest Christmakwanzukkah holiday greetings, and enjoy my year in review.

I hope that 2018 found you well and leaves you in the same condition.

2018 started with a new cousin-in-law in the fold as Mom’s nephew got married in a NYE Eve ceremony at a Kentucky distillery - alas, not the Jim Beam distillery - to a wonderful young woman named Mackenzie. We even indulged their Kentucky Wildcat fandom by watching the women’s loss to Tennessee the next day… anything to stay inside, what with temperatures hovering around 10 that weekend.

As for our travels this year, *deep breath*:
We made a wiser decision for our Opening Day trip. Instead of being wind-and-snowed out in Dayton last year, we went to North Carolina to see games in Greensboro and Durham. We saved our Lake Erie tour for Memorial Day weekend, where we watched the Toledo Mud Hens from the comfort of the Klinger suites and the Lake County Captains (suburban Cleveland) from concourse level. Our grand trip of the year had an Empire State focus with a dip into Connecticut. And closing out the year, thanks to Hurricane Florence I took Chad to the Marshall/Virginia Tech game, where we once again found our way into the club-level seating.

Healthwise, age creeps up on everyone, although it once again focused on our elders. Dad gallantly postponed his back surgery until the Mrs.’ knee replacement was somewhat settled, leaving me to do all the driving for his surgery and follow-up appointments. (At least now Dad knows how I feel when he’s driving me around.)

And despite trying to keep the FAA doctors out of the loop, Dad’s medications finally got him grounded as a pilot. He can still take the controls as long as there’s a licensed pilot on board, so he’s not completely lost.

The work front for both of us hasn’t changed, so unless “house contestant on Jeopardy!” becomes a thing - and at $500 per show win or lose, I’m not asking for much - I’ll still be counting the DMV’s money for the foreseeable.

Be careful and remember - speak kindly and kindly let others speak.
