July Journey: Day 1

BOWLING GREEN KY -- Our final vacation of the year started off a somewhat serendipitous note: because of field conditions, Bowling Green's game last night was postponed and rescheduled for a doubleheader starting at 5:00 this evening. This didn't affect our plans; considering we would be crossing into the Central time zone, our planned ETA was 4:00 anyway.

We decided to take the southern route out of Charleston, which got us to the town of Hazard for lunch. While the meal itself wasn't bad, the atmosphere at the Circle T was -- first because, apparently, Perry County doesn't have a indoor smoke-free ordinance, but more importantly, because of a deceased cockroach ("bereft of life") in the men's restroom.

Bowling Green is the home of the Western Kentucky University Hilltoppers, most famous for the reddish blob -- a mound of dirt? a handkerchief? -- of a mascot often featured in SportsCenter promotions. More importantly to Chad, WKU is joining Marshall's league a year from now, and what better way to mark his territory than to make a preemptive visit?

The "Hot Rods", so named because of the National Corvette Museum and assembly plant on the outskirts of town, split their doubleheader with the Dayton Dragons, winning 2-1 and losing 7-5 in the second.
