Day 3: Stuck in the Midwest with you

Jun 27, 2010 06:35

OVERLAND PARK, KS -- This morning, we forewent the customary complimentary breakfast for breakfast at a McDonald's atop I-44, 60 miles outside of Tulsa. (However, due to the rising sun, our alternate seating area had an obscured view of the traffic.)

After another 209 miles to KC, we stopped in to get a KU shirt, then headed straight for Kauffman Stadium and the interstate batle between the Cardinals and Royals. Hearts and minds were elsewhere, however, as was most obvious from a fifth-inning eruption from the bar in right field: the one (and only) US goal. But for the event at hand, the large Cardinal contingent left happy with a 5-3 win over KC. However, the Cards fans were constantly reminded during the game of the 1985 World Series title that the Royals won over the Cardinals.

We went to our hotel room to cool off from the 90+-temps, only to turn around an hour later for dinner at Cheeseburger In Paradise. (They say some singer owns it; I don't know more any more than that.) Chad went with the St Bart's Chicken while I sampled the West Indies Burger, complete with goat cheese and mango mayonnaise.

We then went our separate ways: Chad to see The A-Team at the cineplex, and I went across the street for professional soccer. The Wizards were not up to Team USA standards, falling to New York 3-nil.
