In a food mood

In the past month, I've made several condolence dishes for the bereaving families. In both instances, they've asked for the recipes -- which I've obliged.

But I've got this unsubstantiated suspicion that they're just OOHing and AAHing my dishes because I'm a man. I don't like this naggging he's-a-good-cook-for-a-guy vibe.

Now I've never liked the whole theory of grading on a curve -- even if I was usually setting the curve, whenever applied, when I was in school. The curve just covers up the class' overall performance. If the highest score was an 82 and that's now an A, that's just not accurate.

And don't forget, this whole women-in-the-kitchen is really a recent trend. I mean, all the major chefs in the fanciest restaurants during the first half of last century? Guys. And Emeril... Hel-lo!

I'm not saying women need to be prohibited from the kitchen; Rachael Ray has made great strides in bringing the working woman to the stovetop. I'm just saying, we men can do just as good a cooking job as women can.

*raises fist* Equal praise for equal portions!
