Things I'm thankful for

While there are the obvious things--

*Meeting up with long-distant friends and family
*The safety of those in danger
* New lives added into the family

--none was more touching than what happened after Thanksgiving dinner at my cousin's house.

Her dad brought pictures of her and her sisters from days gone by. But included was a set of note cards written by my long-deceased (1999) grandmother for a Grandparents' Day speech. (Since it mentions my "newborn" cousin Stephanie, I'm pegging the year as 1988.)

In it, she talked about her own grandparents -- one set had moved down to Charleston, while the other had a horse she liked to ride -- but the best part was when she recounted the birth of her first grandchild, my older-by-three-months cousin.

She wrote that she remembered my uncle coming out and telling her that it was a healthy baby girl. But the next thing she remembered was being force-fed orange juice by a nurse.

That's right: my grandmother passed out. Hopefully, she greeted me three months later with a little more decorum.

family, friends
