Movie diary: Heartland cinema

W9:00 American Teen, Lyric Cinema Café (Fort Collins)

First off, a word about the cineplex itself.

It's what I call a "gourmet cineplex," since in addition to the movies themselves, the Lyric also provides a fully-stocked menu. So in addition to the movie ticket, I bought myself something called bubble tea. And then when I entered Theatre 2, I was confronted with a sofa, a reclining desk chair in the back (which I took), and regular movie seats.

Call me a sucker for HS documentaries. American Teen is no different, with The Outsider, The Jock, etc. But the documentarian takes it a step further by providing animations sprinkled throughout the film of each of the character's dreams.

While I could touch on the fact that the star basketball player's dad is an Elvis impersonator by night, or The Queen Bee has a tragic event in her past revealed halfway through the film that makes her sympathetic -- for about 10 minutes.

But I'm going to go with Hannah, the bohemian artist/musician.

She starts off distraught after her boyfriend sleeps with her and then decides to break up. She gets into a funk; not wanting to go to school to see him just becomes not wanting to go to school. She soon returns, swearing off boys, which will hold her back from leaving Indiana for film school in California.

All of a sudden, Neil Diamond rears his ugly head.

During the school's Battle of the Bands, she has back-up vocals for her band's version of "Cherry Cherry". The Heartthrob (Jock's teammate) becomes absolutely smitten.

Then, the jerk breaks up with her via text message(!!).

The movie's postscript shows that all have grown from their mistakes and shortcomings.
