GOODLAND KS -- Who knew that Colorado was so flat?
I headed east out of Colorado Springs, and put the cruise on 65 (the speed limit on rural roads). Sure, I slowed down as necessary through the towns -- with names like Kit Carson, Wild Horse, and Cheyenne Wells -- but that never took long.
I was going to call Dad along the route, but there was no cell coverage. No cell coverage? As flat as that terrain was, a 200-foot tower could cover hundreds of square miles.
Thanks to the fine advertising folks at
KLOE/KKCI, I uncovered a nice little pick-up/sit-down restaurant on Main St called Applejack's, tied in with a
Chester's Chicken. I left with a Reuben combo + onion rings.
Also, there's a little quirk about Goodland.
Four of Kansas' far western counties (including Goodland's Sherman Co) are in the Mountain time zone, but the entire western half of the state gets its TV stations out of Wichita, which is in Central.
So Wichita prime time runs 6-8 or 6-9 (depending on the network) here in town, and with two Denver stations on the local cable you can end up watching 90210 on KSCW-Wichita at 6 and KWGN-Denver at 7.
