a gender-broken retelling of my IBW drama

The chemistry that I felt with Lee was apparent the instant he got out of the car. I could only see his head since he was on the other side from me, but he just sort of bounded over to give me a hug with a "hey there, pretty lady." I was working gate and welcoming newcomers with shots of lemoncello and absinthe. They had to ring the gong to ( Read more... )

I guess I made the assumption that the person in your story is Italian, and after I made my comment it occurred to me that this was perhaps not the case. But regardless of actual national origin, let's just say there were several points in your story where I nodded in sympathetic recognition.

("Ti amo alla follia" - "I love you to the point of madness" for your non-multilingual readers - is a common phrase lovers say to each other in Italy, I'm told, in case you didn't know.)

The gender-breaking is brilliant, by the way. When I dated an Italian woman I was always completely baffled as to how to reconcile the fact that she described herself as a feminist with all the "this is how a man is supposed to treat a woman where I'm from" stuff.

I don't mean to be completely culturally insensitive here - I assume such phenomena are not confined to Italy, I'm sure not everyone in Italy thinks and acts in such ways, and finally I imagine Italian women would/do have their own complaints about American men - I'm just sayin', it made my brain hurt.

Thanks. I was trying to figure out how to tell the story, and nothing made sense until that popped into my brain. It was pretty funky to be told how to act like a man, considering how much time I've actually spent on that idea myself.

That's some crazy behavior alright. Glad it mellowed.

Wow, he sounds reallly confused. I am glad you held your integrity and personal strength (like you would do anything else). I have to say, those electrified encounters sure are exciting, but not worth putting up with being treated crappily. Also, there is no telling how he acts most of the time, this could be a reaction to being in in that particular social situation at that particular time in his life. I have certainly had periods at events where I acted waaay out of my norm, for various reasons.

Yep. Confused is about right. I've been told by "him" that the behavior is alcohol-fueled, so I've tried to communicate outside of that in the last few days. In the end, I think this experience is of little importance for "him," so not much time will be spent reflecting on it.

I'm looking forward to hearing the in-person version of this. . .
