Late

Tapping my fingers on the wheel, I glared at yet another red light that I had the pleasure of running into.  My watch beeped once again, telling me that it was the time that I should have been at Ryan’s house, but yet, I was stopped in a large line of traffic.  I lightly placed my head on the top of the wheel and sighed, knowing that it would be another twenty minutes before I actually reached the halfway mark, then it would be another forty, thirty if I was lucky.

“God damn.”  I groaned as my phone started vibrating and ringing in my pocket of my baggy jeans.  Flipping it open, I didn’t even get the chance to say hello before Ryan’s angry voice yelled at me through the phone.

“Where the fuck are you?  Don’t you understand how important today is?”  I felt a shift, knowing that my day had just gone from bad to horrible, horrible to fucked up.  Running a hand through my un-brushed curls, I glared at the car in front of me; as if it was their fault the light wasn’t changing.

“Look, Dunn, I-“

“No Bam, you’re not sorry.  Even if you were, you aren’t as sorry as you should be.  You are probably stuck in traffic, aren’t you?”

“Yes, and-“

“Bam!  EVERY ONE knows that you should leave the house before rush hour.  What were you doing at home?  Mopping around the house because you can’t get your life together?”  I knew that Ryan didn’t mean a single thing he was saying, well, at least the last sentence he just said.  He was just a little hot headed, but that didn’t mean I couldn’t snap back, for it had royally pissed me off.

“Well, I’m sorry that your friend is such a fuck up and can’t seem to keep a girl around for more then a month.”  I know that my words cut down deep, for I heard a sigh, also known as the beginning of apologies.

“Look, Bam, I didn’t mean-“

“I know, save it.  I should have left long ago.  I’m sorry, it’s just...I don’t know.”  I mumbled, not knowing how to finish my thoughts.  After Missy had left, it had turned my world around.  We had known another since high school, and all the sudden, she was out of my life, for good.  I would lie to say it didn’t hurt.

“Well, just get here as soon as you can.  I have a lot of friends here that would love to meet you.  And Bam, I’m really sorry.  Maybe you will meet someone here.”  Ryan suggested.  I could tell that he was trying to make me happier, but it just stung even more.  I wouldn’t be going to my friends birthday get together with my lovely wife anymore.  Maybe it’s for the best thought.  We had been both suffocating another.

“I don’t know about finding someone knew, but I’ll defiantly be there.  See you soon.”  I said and closed the phone, lightly tapping at the accelerator as the light turned green.  Once I had enough space, I moved to the next lane and sped down the highway, getting a lot of dirty looks from the drivers as I sped by.
