Go Ringtone! I Choose You!

You know you do it, don’t lie.

You hear someone’s ringtone go off and you have to see who it is. Then the inevitable questioning starts: Where did you get it? What else do you have. It becomes an exchange. For most, it’s friendly. For a small group, the battle call.

Ringtone Battle.

Yes, it’s silly, it’s retarded on so many levels, but it happens. Two or more people decide to pull out their various ringtones on their phone in an attempt to outdo the other’s selection.

Back when the real sound tones were just starting up, I used to kill at this. I always had something unique, different or up to date on my phone. Now as I’ve gotten older and things like this having the most up to date phone with every type of gadget have taken a back seat to things like say, keeping gas in my car and having actual food. But it doesn’t mean I don’t occasionally in indulge.

Case in point, a few weeks ago, I was hanging with a group of people I used to work with. Now if you know anything about gamers/anime heads (the particular group of people I was around at the time), you know they are all about the obscure and oddball. Anything that is appreciated by these people have to straddle the line between well known but not popular. No pop songs allowed here.

So we were standing around waiting to be seated and one person’s phone goes off. It happens to be “Spider-Pig” from the Simpsons movie. A quick laugh and everyone busts out their phones. Soon, I’m hearing everything from “This is Sparta!!!” to “It’s Peanutbutter Jelly Time!” to the always good “Soul Glo” from Coming to America.

Now, everyone turns to me at this point because I’ve said nothing, but I’m still holding my phone in my hand. I haven’t really had much to mess with because as I’ve said, I don’t have the latest and greatest phone and I haven’t been much on keeping my phone up to date. (Sprint makes it hard to do sometimes because their ringtone cost too damn much and it’s hard to find a site that I like enough to use.)

So I open up my phone and turn on the one ring I had that I thought was obscure enough.

The Theme to the show “Where In the World is Carmen Sandiego.”

Me -1, Everyone else - 0.

Bow to my lameness.
