John had been waiting. While taking care of the kids, the house, always the undercurrent of anxiety. Once he gets the kids to bed, it's just him and the silence, broken only by the ticking clock.

Every car that pulls up, he listens to hear if it's hers. Even when it isn't, he goes to the window to look. So he sees the government car stop, the two people in suits get out, and his heart starts hammering. He goes to the door, to be right there when they ring up, so the noise won't wake the kids. He has no plans or concepts for what comes next -- just...don't wake the kids.

Erica's boss (Lou to John, Agent Wallace on duty) presses the buzzer, hating this, hating having to do it.

When they get in, he just looks at John, knowing enough about the man to not bullshit with him.

"Two bullets, John, In the side."

John knows a blow's gonna fall. He just doesn't know how hard of one. Then Lou speaks. If she was dead, there'd be a little more prep, some bullshit attempt to soften it (hah!) or at least give the other person time to get some kind of walls up. Blunt is good. He's blunt back, staring into Lou's eyes.

"Where is she?"

"Mount Sinai. John." Lou looks at him, not bullshitting. He doesn't say anything else, just lets his eyes say it's not good.

"We'll hang around and drive you."
