Erica's been working on a case for a long time. Suspected terrorist, American born, and she has a solid lead. This case has been long nights and not being home, and if she can just wrap it up, she'll take a few weeks off. But it has to be done first. It'll boost her career for sure - she's a young agent, and this is getting a lot of internal attention.
The day of the raid on the man's home, Erica leads her team out, and they're all wearing protective gear, she's worried but not apprehensive about it. This is part of her job, and for the most part, she feels good about it. When it dissolves into chaos though, and the man who has her back is shot, she's completely open. There are more men in the house than they thought. Before she really takes in what's happening, she feels herself falling backward. Two shots have hit her in the side, where the vest she's wearing doesn't wrap.
A couple hours later, Erica's boss and another agent pull up outside of the McClane household. Every cop knows that two other cops or agents showing up at the door is never good.
