His legs are on fire, but carrying him still, right into the headmaster’s office. The shooting comes closer, soldiers running not far behind him. He opens the drawer and tosses letters into the fire. A second later, they come in, pointing three foreign guns at his head. They grab him roughly and bind him tightly, but Lui’s plan is safe.

Two frustrated young men look back at him, willing him to leave.

Death had swiped through the country and heavy taxes crippled arms that could hold a weapon. Invasion was worse than either of them could have expected. There was no wine to toast with in this run-down inn, that held two men in disguise.
“We must do something,” Orphe said, trying to quell his desperation.
“Yes,” Lui agreed, but what he did not know.
