It all began with an infatuation, a childhood crush of sorts. He seemed to be a good person to have a crush on, the tall, enigmatic and charming older boy who always had the time for him. He had never told him of his crush, always hiding it, afraid of rejection.
It had taken him being away from him for three years to realize that it was more than just a childhood crush after all. It was confusing at first, he did not understand the dreams and the smile he always had on whenever he thought of him. He did not understand the hammering of his heart, the quickening of his breath whenever he heard the name. He did not understand, until one day, he came to him.
He was nervous too, the younger boy observed. It seemed that they had caught the same sickness, the same illness that seemed to plague them whenever one thought of another. It was the older boy, with the experience and the world-wise views who realized it in the end. They were in love.
He had never thought of it this one, as Mother had told him once that men should lay with women and not other men, but his Mother’s son was already gone and it was now a young soldier standing in front of the other. He shyly accepted the rose, and laughed as the older boy ruffled his own hair and gasped as he was pulled into the deep, warm arms. His heart beat faster again, his breath quicken as he inhaled the scent of roses and musk and fresh soap all at the same time.
“Treize was right,” He decided, thoughts leaving him as he held the older boy even closer, “As he always is.”
It had begun with a childhood infatuation, and it had ended in love.
