#5 Jinx by Meg Cabot
Jean from Iowa aka Jinx just moved to New York City and is now living with her aunt, uncle, and three cousins. Jinx got her nick name because of how unlucky she is, which is also part of the reason she has had to move to New York. Now she is trying to fit in with her snobby cousin Tory who is into drugs and witchcraft, not to mention has a huge crush on the cute boy next door. Tory wants Jinx to join her coven and help her (Tory) become the next great witch in their family. Jinx doesn't want to get mixed up in witchcraft again, and is also crushing on the boy next door, who seems to like her back, even if it is just "as friends". She's getting on her cousin's bad side in a big way, which can't be good for her bad luck streak.
Honestly, I found this book to be a bit boring. I am all for witchcraft and I love a fun story about it (like the Sweep series, even though those are AMAZINGLY inaccurate). This book didn't have much in way of the witchcraft story. The main character Jinx didn't seem to have much bad luck, instead she seemed more brain dead or just plain stupid. The book seemed a lot longer than 260 pages. We keep being told that there is a "big reason" that Jinx had to move from Iowa to New York, but we don't get told about that reason until page 200. I dunno what is up with me and Meg Cabot. I used to love her books, but either I've matured or her writing is just going to hell, and I doubt that I am really maturing that much because I just got hooked on Melrose Place and One Tree Hill.
