Trick or Treat by
Katerina Diamond My rating:
4 of 5 stars This was a completely blind read for me, so I wasn't really sure what to expect.
At the start, a young boy is kidnapped, and DS Imogen Grey is called in to find where he is. There is one witness: A teenager called Jason, who saw the incident while breaking into his ex-girlfriend's house on a sort of revenge mission.
I realised quite fast that this was part of a series of books (the seventh in fact) about Imogen Grey, and so I would have probably benefitted from beginning at the start. The novel referenced an incident involving Imogen's boyfriend Adrian from one of the previous titles, which impacts on this book's plotline, and probably future titles.
Unlike many detective stories, I noticed that the audience got to know more than the characters did, so when murders start occurring, the reader is told exactly who the perpetrator is behind a pivotal moment that changes the course of the novel completely.
Overall, I quite enjoyed this, and would consider reading the series from the beginning some time. This is another book that I'd have given 3.5 stars to if I could, but there was enough thrill value for this book to earn that extra half a star. There were enough plot twists to keep me guessing. The ending was good for whetting the audience's appetite for what might happen next.
