The Blackbird by Tim Weaver

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book is part of a series about the character David Raker; it was a bit of a blind read, and maybe I'd have benefitted from reading the earlier titles. Not a lot is information is given about David Raker, who narrates most of the chapters, except that he has lost his wife. I also noticed some bits at the end that hinted at a larger plot arc that probably develops throughout the series.

The novel starts with a supposedly fatal car crash, which a couple was inside. The only problem is that there are no bodies, so Raker is called in to get to the bottom of things.

The narrative structure is a little unusual, in that there are several chapters that don't have the standard numbering, and which take the form of flashbacks, told in third person, and from other characters' points of view, as a larger mystery unfolds.

The main story revolves around an incident many years ago where several murder victims were found, and involves the detective who attempted to solve them, also explaining the connection with the missing couple.

This book was a little tough to follow at times, as there was so much to take in; at times it felt that every chapter had a new plot twist. So, as I went along, it seemed that Raker was uncovering new information that seemed unrelated to the main case at first. Eventually, all of the plots inevitably dovetailed into each other, and luckily I wasn't able to predict any of the many twists that came along.

Overall, four stars seems like a decent rating, and I might one day try reading the book series from the beginning.
