October 2018 reading:
56. Flame in the Dark, by Faith Hunter (342 pages)
When there's an attempted assassination on a Senator, PsyLED is called in because the perpetrator is invisible to cameras. Nell discovers a trail of death that seems to follow the assassin. This case will challenge her team in ways they can't imagine, and will reveal secrets and powers no one expected.
57. Dark Queen, by Faith Hunter (432 pages)
Jane opens the door only to nearly get shot by a stranger--one who looks oddly familiar--and who believes himself to be her brother. She doesn't have time to deal with this new development, though. The Sangre Duello has started, and the New Orleans vamps thumb their noses at the European vamps' sense of decorum. This is taken as an insult, and in some cases leads to matches being won. Unfortunately, not all can be won, and Jane cannot save everyone--especially with witch magic enabling a saboteur. But Leo, as always, has planned for every possibility. Even the unthinkable.
58. The Burning Maze, by Rick Riordan (431 pages)
Apollo-turned-Lester Papadopoulos has started to realize just how many things he's let slide over the centuries, and how those lapses and indiscretions have snowballed. He doesn't like to admit that Zeus was right, but... Still tethered to Meg, who is forced to confront the childhood she lost, he has to make it through a burning maze and save one of the Oracles--but her last prophecy means one of their number may fall. Of course, she also said they need a cloven guide--and Meg knows one who fits the bill. Poor Grover.
59. The Complete Sookie Stackhouse Stories, by Charlaine Harris (368 pages)
This has more stories than A Touch of Dead, and some are from the perspectives of other characters, which is interesting. Definitely one to pick up. I'd read "If I Had a Hammer" before, and I really enjoyed "Two Blondes."
60. Brief Cases, by Jim Butcher (437 pages)
An awesome collection of more short stories following Harry Dresden, including all the Bigfoot stories, and an amazing novella from the point of view of Mouse and Maggie, going back and forth between their perspectives. I really enjoyed "Bombshells."
61. Traitor to the Blood, by Barb and J.C. Hendee (396 pages)
Having uncovered Magiere's past, it's time for Leesil to uncover his own. It means travelling back to the place he grew up, the place he was raised as an assassin, and the place he fled and abandoned his parents to an uncertain fate: the Warlands. And if the warlord, Dartmouth, learns of his presence, they may all perish. My main complaint with this was Dartmouth seemed really stupid and sealed his own fate through that.
