Seraph of the End, Vol. 3 by Takaya Kagami

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I'm just not as impressed with this as everyone else. I find it sophomoric. I simply do not like the lead character and it makes it very difficult to enjoy this.

So Yuichiro and the others are finally assigned their first mission with a girl named Mitsuba who is appalled to be stuck with rookies (even though she seems to be the same age) and apparently hates Shinoa. I could handle the mean spirited bantering between the two girls if not for Yuichiro's predictable failure to follow what either of the girls (who are the de facto leaders) tell him to do. They end up in a worse battle than expected and naturally he doesn't follow orders, doesn't do any team work, he just rushes out to kill vampires.

And after that, they get into even hotter water and he does it again. Yes he saves people but he is turning into a completely one note character that is very difficult to give a crap about. If he died next volume, I'd consider this manga vastly improved but since he's the point of view character and there seems to be a prophecy about him we know that's not happening.

The only things I liked about this was seeing Mika's life now that he's been turned into a vampire and whatever it it is Guren is planning at the very end of this thing.

I guess I'll get one more volume but if that doesn't give Yuichiro some depth that's it unless a local library picks it up. I don't like it enough to keep plopping down 10$ a volume.
