Grammar pet peeve of the day: verb versus noun

May 01, 2008 19:12

Sign up, log in, drop off, etc. are verbs.
Sign-up, login, drop-off, etc. are nouns or adjectives. Not verbs.

I know I shouldn't let it bother me, but it's just as nonsensical to say "It's easy to sign-up" as to say "It's easy to television."

(PS- I don't get bent out of shape about blog grammar, just professional publications.)

So. A login is your username, right? And a drop-off is a place you drop things off. What is your definition of a sign-up? Is it the sheet where you sign up? The process of signing up?

Yeah.. using that one as a noun might be pushing it, but you could say, "sign-up is this Saturday." As an adjective, though, it works: "the sign-up sheet."
