The state of American Politics in 2008
The above photograph was part of a mailed out leaflet that was distributed by the state of Virginia's Republican Party. The brilliant part of this strategy of fear mongering is you can't blame McCain-Palin for it because it's a state initiative. The National Republicans never endorsed this ad (though they never condemned it). It is the most direct attack ad produced by any official press in this entire campaign. No other ad has blatantly called Obama evil before. The official spokesperson for the campaign said he can't be sure that photograph is truly Obama.
In Western Pennsylvania, a lawsuit is underway to stop a supposed third party from send out automated calls to potential voters with a message that is supposedly from Barack Obama himself. The call starts out calmly and the automated Obama asks the person on the phone what their most important issue is. The automated Obama goes into a crazy rant that includes the word nigger. You can imagine the fright of old people sitting at home who get a call from a presidential candidate who sounds like a radical terrorist.
I feel blessed to live in Canada where politicians attack senselessly sometimes but they do not raise the illiterate and uneducated to become barbarians for their causes by inciting extreme fear and hatred in the population. I know we just re-elected Harper, but I do believe it was a fair election. None of this sneaky desperate shit that the republicans are pulling in Virginia or Pennsylvania. Or denying voter registration to people living in foreclosed homes in Michigan. I see it as unfortunate that most Canadians want Harper to lead, but it is the true will of a misguided people. The shit that goes on down south of here is of another world, another century in my eyes. This is how elections are literally stolen. This is why politicians are called criminals.
