When Hal got back, he instantly knew that Roger had done something. It was the way Roger was dancing nervously from foot to foot and twisting his fingers that suggested it. Hal closed his eyes, then got out of the car and stared at him.
“It really wasn’t my fault!” Roger said.
“What did you do?” Hal asked wearily.
“Um. Well. I only put her out for a moment …”
“Only put who - no, only put what out for a moment?!” Hal demanded, trying to remember which of the animals Roger had been particularly friendly with at the moment. Oh God, if he’d set the wild dog puppies loose …
“Florence,” Roger said.
“Flor - Roger!”
“But she’ll be fine!” Roger said, sounding hopeful. “I mean, how far can she really have gone anyway?”
“Oh my God,” Hal said. “Dad will kill you. Possibly after I have. Have you told anyone?”
“I called the police,” Roger said, a little defensively. “I warned them … ”
“Did you mention to them what Florence is?” Hal asked.
“Um,” Roger said.
Hal groaned.

A few miles off, the police were receiving a terrified phone call from a woman who had just discovered there was a hippopotamus in the back garden.
