Summary: Naru, Mutsumi and Keitaro are forming a study group - but Naru's got her doubts about it. Naru/Mutsumi, implied Naru/Keitaro. I'm not very happy with this one - the voices were really hard to do. But it's another fandom, so pah ^^
"We didn't need to study out on the roof."
"But Naru..." Mutsumi turns, smiles. "I thought it would be fun."
A breeze sweeps over the warm tiles, rushing through Naru's hair and flicking over the pages of the textbook she's been trying to study for the last fifteen minutes. If she'd had her way, they would have stayed inside like normal people. But Keitaro and Mutsumi aren't normal, and she'd been outvoted.
Okay, so she could have stayed inside, but... the thought of Keitaro and Mutsumi sitting out here in the sun while she stays indoors with her books makes her feel twisted up inside; especially as on her own there'd be no one to punch. We're a study group now, so we study as a group.
Even if only one of us actually knows how to study. Keitaro said he'd join them in a moment, because he's trying to track down a missing book (probably got distracted by someone getting changed, Naru thinks, scowling) and Mutsumi certainly doesn't look like she plans on learning anything. She's leaning back, face glowing in the sun, smiling as the breeze ruffles her hair.
Naru coughs, loudly. But Mutsumi just smiles at her again and says, "We can study soon. But it's nice out here."
"No, we have to study now." Naru hears her sharp voice bouncing off the rooftops around them, and grits her teeth.
Mutsumi still smiles.
"I always studied on the roof before," she said.
Naru fights down the urge to sneer maybe that's why you're a third-year ronin. Swallowing, she glances down at her book, tries to read, but the words won't join up in her mind. She's never studied on the roof. She's never studied anywhere but her bedroom and for much of her life, she's never done anything but study in her bedroom.
"Why?" she snaps at last.
Mutsumi looks surprised, as if the answer is obvious. "It's fun. When it's sunny I feel happy, when it's grey I feel calm, and when it's snowing or there's a thunderstorm that makes learning really interesting."
Naru sighs. "Well, okay, it may be fun, but you're not telling me that's the easiest way to learn."
"Oh, it is." Mutsumi looks surprised. "I never understood about lightning conductors until -"
"Okay, fine. Look, we don't really have time to chat." Naru suddenly wishes Keitaro was here. He at least is worried about the exams. Mutsumi never seems to worry about anything.
The other girl glances at her, then slides across to sit next to her, and picks up a book. "It's okay, Naru-san."
"I never said it wasn't."
Keitaro would have understood what she's trying to say. Naru bites down fiercely on her lower lip, and wonders again whether this study group is a good idea. It's tiring enough constantly motivating herself, without having to drive the other two on as well.
Not to mention Keitaro's constant pervert antics, and Mutsumi's constant anaemia attacks, and accidents that leave Naru in compromising positions with someone, and the warmth she feels when Keitaro gives her that shy grin and straightens his glasses, or the odd breathlessness when Mutsumi accidentally stumbles against her, and all the stories of childhood promises...
It might be more practical to study alone.
Mutsumi is watching her. Naru tenses as the other girl leans across, over the books, until their faces are almost touching.
The breeze strokes her hair.
"Mutsumi... I..."
She leans forward - Mutsumi's breath is soft and warm -
There's a crash.
Naru leaps up, and sees Keitaro standing there, staring and bright red, a pile of dropped books at his feet. His resulting capture and launch into space are suitably distracting that when she comes to sit back down, she can pretend nothing has happened. But she knows now that she's definitely not going to study alone.
