Zmirak: "All Your Church Are Belong to Us"

Feb 18, 2010 10:01

Go back to Hell. Our Church belongs to Christ.

Zmirak very nicely articulates why bare churches and felt banners and choose-your-own-adventure liturgy are not good enough.

Well, I prefer the NO, but I'm a convert, so I'm apparently to be viewed with pity and generous condescension. I couldn't possibly have any legitimate reasons for preferring the NO; according to a commenter (the blogger the Curt Jester), it's like preferring an ugly woman to a beautiful woman.

When I'm wearing my hat and kneeling to receive Communion on the tongue, I'll try to remember that I am an ignorant hostage to the 70s.

If only I could be merely orthodox. I would cry with joy if I could be so holy as to be merely orthodox.

I realize it's a deeply personal question but... why do you prefer the OF? I'm genuinely curious.

I readily confess my preference for the EF is partly due to a reaction against the bare churches, felt banners, liturgical dancers, modernist homilies ("The TRUE miracle of the loaves and fishes was Jesus inspired everyone to share,") and third rate Broadway showtunes generously labeled hymns one hears in the average suburban parish. I envy you if you've only ever had spiritually uplifting, solemn celebrations of the OF in your part of the country. I've attended such celebrations of the OF myself, but where I'm from they're more the exception than the rule, alas. I wish my faith were as strong as yours to ignore all of the abuses and silliness.

I still get the occasional dirty look, so don't worry.

I stopped going altogether for a couple of months, and currently affect black boots and jeans and motorcycle jacket at the EF.

A guy tried to lecture me at Christmas about uncovered hair, but I shut him down. There's still plenty of people who want to hang out with me for coffee.
