Up closer

Name a quality you like about yourself: I've always liked the fact that people find me easy to talk to.

Name a quality you hate about yourself: Sometimes I get so engrossed in thought that I actually tune people out, and I don't mean to do that, and I feel bad when I do it.

What motivates you?: Frankly, two things motivate me. The first thing being my future, the path I've chosen demands that I succeed, and that I put pride, effort, and skill into that which I undertake. The other thing that motivates me has been a constant throughout my life, I want to become someone that I like, someone that, if I weren't me, I would look up to. I can't say love has seriously motivated me, because at best it's a sporadic occurance in my life, but it has moved my hand in certain directions from time to time.

What do you fear?: I fear abandonment. I fear becoming a huge success, but having nothing of real personal value. I fear that one day what I do have will be ripped away from me. I fear ANY object getting close to my eyes, it freaks me out. Worst case scenario would have me on the cover of Time magazine, coming home to hear hate messages on my answering machine before some secret police bust through my mansion, burn my eyes out with hot coals and toss me somewhere in the middle of Africa. That would suck. I also fear coming off as too self-centered. Enough about my fears already!!!

Who/What influences you the most?: I'd say that my friends influence me to a great degree, and that I probably view their influence as the most positive one. My family also influences me, but it's more of a reminder that bad choices lead to a bad life. There are some who don't fit into either category, and neither does their influence. Overall, it's my friends, family, and those I care deeply for that influence me. I also influence myself, but how could I not?

How did you come across this group?: Co-Creator/Lazy Vice President/Application Creator, I came across this group when C.T.G. proposed it to me, since then we've been developing it to this point. If he were the Bush, I'd be the Dick.

Obligatory Favorites

Favorite Color: Green and Silver. Don't make me choose.

Favorite Bands/Musical Genre: I'm naming genres, since artists number in the hundreds. I'm a huge fan of TRANCE, but I also like rock, (modern, alternative, and 80's), comedy (Weird AL, TMBG), classical (Piano in particular, Chopin if you must know). Beyond that, I'm pretty open-minded, hit me with something and I'll probably like it, or smile and nod my head until you go away.

Favorite Book(s): I'm enjoying Milton's Paradise Lost at the moment, Stranger in a Strange Land, The Wall, Seven Theories on Human Nature, Honor's Exile, and Ringworld are some that come to mind.

Favorite Movie(s): Gattaca. I loved that movie when I first saw it, and I still do. Monty Python flicks come close, though.

Favorite Quote: Vincent Freeman -  "You want to know how I did it? This is how I did it Anton: I never saved anything for the swim back." Gattaca reference, but the idea is very simple, don't act as though you have an opportunity to come back to where you were when you started, you may never get that chance, you may die by swimming too far out, but you will go much further than the person who looks to return to where they started in the first place.

Now for some opinions

Organized religion: I do not mind them, however, I choose not to be affiliated with any one of them. I believe that is a great thing that people are able to express their beliefs, and that that right should be protected at all costs. That being said, I'm very cynical about the hypocrisy that I see in organized religion, the concept rocks, but the execution is a bit shoddy.

Minority rights: We're all humans. We get what rights our perspective governments and ruling authorities give us. Why not just leave it at that?

War in Iraq: I disagree with the reasons why we are over there. I firmly believe that the course of action we took is not one that, had we waited and let clearer heads prevail, would have happened. That being said, I fully support our troops, and believe that we should give then everything we possibly can so that they successfully accomplish their mission. The blame resides in the top brass and the federal legislation more than it does with the military personell that patrol Baghdad.

Human cloning: A double-edged sword. One one hand, cloning will allow us to have autonomous transplants, if some of the bugs are worked out of it. The problem with this is that there will inevitably be someone, somewhere, that uses this technology to oppress their fellow man. This is a Pandora's box, and I believe that the possible goods vastly outweigh the possible evils.

Space exploration: Humanity cannot afford to drag it's feet on this one. A whole universe to explore, learn, and see. Things completely alien to what our own little globe has on it. Sign me up!

Abortion: My stance is somewhat simple, I can't legislate someone's morality. The US allows mothers to get abortions, thereby washing it's hands of the moral implications of killing a fetus, leaving it up to each individual. It's a woman's decision, and I as a male cannot possibly comprehend the emotional and physical intricacies involved with that, I'm not wired that way. If a woman wants to give birth to a child born out of rape, so be it, if not, she's GOING to find ways to stop it from happening, law or no law.

Gun control: Alright, if I want an assault rifle, I'm going to get one. It's like prohibition on alcohol, people will get around it, unless you intend to take out some longstanding due process methods of search and seizure, in which case I will gladly give you whatever guns I have, we can even televise it on the evening news. I can see it now.... "Derranged Gunman Barricaded in House". Face it, there's no reason I need an AR-15 Assault rifle, unless the deer gets one too. I want to be able to own firearms, though, and I believe that this right is essential. The first step to dominion is disarming the civillian, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Influence of mass media on society:We're constantly bombarded with images, slogans, subliminal messages, and eat at Denny's. There's no way around it, and if you go into marketing, you'll be figuring out new and exciting ways to save at Fry's. It's all one big sales pitch, designed so that we're more complacent to spend our money on things we don't really need, so that the marketers will profit, and with that profit, buy more things they don't need. It's part of capitalism.

Your philosophy

Do you believe in a higher power?: I believe in a higher power, but I also believe that we owe it to ourselves as human beings to find a reasonable explaination to a great many things that we regarded as "Miracles" in days past.

What is your outlook on life?: There are good days, there are bad days. Sometimes I don't want to get up in the morning, other days I'm rushing out the door so that maybe the day will begin faster. This is the only life I have, this is all I have. There are times where I wonder what the future will bring, but I'm certain that if I reach for what I want, I will end up satisfied with my results.

What is love?: Love is when the emotion is gone, and you are still compelled to remain with a person, love goes beyond the feelings and becomes a decision. There are different kinds of love, surely I love my parents in one fashion, my friends in another, a special someone in yet another. It is an emotional bond, reinforced with will and determination, tempered by reason and logic, and transcendent of any be-all end-all definition. That is my definition of love, and I live by it and love by it, so it's not that bad.

Tell us more
Welp, I'm 18. I enjoy all sorts of games, and find myself immersed in an RPG at one moment, and an FPS the next, and then an RTS after that! I've been mapping and doing some slight coding for a BYOND project that may debut in the near future. I'm shipping off to Navy Bootcamp July 15th of this year, my goal is to become a Nuclear Engineer in the Navy's prestigious Nuclear Power Program. I've come to take an interest in music, and hope to someday afford the luxury of making it in my spare time. I've tried my hand at writing, am a proficient public speaker, and keep myself in good physical condition. I built the computer I'm typing this on, and took an entry-level programming course in C#/VB at a local college. I've found myself to be more of a night person, and I have size 13 shoes. I adore animals. I'm also going to venture out and say you won't find many people like me out there, I'm a jack-of-all-trades and have mastered a few, humility not being one of them. I'm Saber.

The Bitter End
Why do you want to join, and would you be a worthwhile member?: Why do I want to join? It's simple, really, I feel that I could better this group by providing my own personal insight into the discussions that may be held. I feel that this will be a good opportunity for me to meet other people, hear what they have to say, and grow more as an individual. I would be a worthwhile member because I actively contribute to 3rd Tavern as is, and I'm certain that this will continue. I'm the VP and a Co-Founder, why wouldn't I be worthwhile?
