Summarizing from FacePlant posts and my Day-Timer. Going bullet-points for organizing purposes, chronologically. Last post appears to have been via Blackberry. tl:dr will be behind cut.
- Back @ War on Wednesday evening, last week.
- Gun class Thursday, shooting version. Class went well, aside from my not finding out that they'd changed the listing to "starts in gunnery area" instead of "starts in A&S tent." One bystander approached, and I offered him a class handout and the chance to take a shot. He declined, and said, "I see those things are dangerous, and I see how careful you people are to be safe around them. I'm not comfortable taking on the responsibility that goes with shooting one of those guns." I can respect that choice for that reason, and told him so.
- Friday, signed up for Chirurgeon shift and a couple of Watch shifts. Got to point, and there were 4 Mentors and no crew chief. I got the radio. This became a recurring theme. Only did one Watch shift, as the following one had more people coming on-shift than we had carts. Learned a new line for being a water-noodge: "Hydrated fighters, hit harder."
- Saturday, Gunners' meeting followed by an unscheduled Dolphin meeting. We found out we'd be shooting for the 2000 (8PM) Toast Heard Round the War. We also had permission to do a night-fire at 2130. hawkyns then looked over at me and said, "No, we are NOT bringing steel wool.".
- After gunners' and order meetings, wound up going to Food Court rather than back to camp for dinner. While chomping a Gyro (hold the pita), my phone rang. [Paste from FacePlant] A Pennsic first for me. My real-life next door neighbor had never been to an SCA event. On impulse, he came to Pennsic Saturday. Loaned him a couple of tunics because he didn't know that you have to have garb until I stuffed him into a tunic Got him down to the camp where his friends are. They were having an, um, interesting party. I came past Vlad's (slave auction in progress) on the way back. Vlad's was lame and tame.
- Sunday, Opening Ceremonies. Also got to Mystic Mail, and set up account. Baronial Court and Hospitality was Sunday evening. Handed on the Mentor's baldric I'd received 3 years ago, to a deserving lady in the Barony. Isn't often that you can do that with not only the Kingdom Chirurgeon and both deputies there, but the Society Chirurgeon as well. Did some baking for it, but the Devon oven was a bit cranky. About 1/3 of the mince tarts didn't get baked due to oven not being hot enough. The ones that did get done, however, were nommed by those who tried them.
- Monday, was the Siege Battle. I fought. Got maybe one or two. Found out that ballista bolts are much less obnoxious when you're armored.
- Tuesday, all hands up for the Woods Battle. Had two gunners go down from heat, before we ever fired. Had to stand Munchkin down for the closing shot, though. Battle started 50 minutes late, so didn't have time to shoot, and make my class on Medicine, Physick, and Surgery. Class went well, then was hanging around Chi Point and got sucked into the vortex for 1600-2000.
- Wednesday was Exercise Day, or turned out that way. Speed-march to Chi Point. Found out they needed a battle Chirurgeon. Speed-march back to camp for bag. S-M to Chi Point again. Leisurely trip to battlefield and back. Speed-March back to camp for gun class material (ordering copies from Mystic Mail in process), and down to class. 2000, up the hill and fired. That again at 2130. Got down the hill, and Ansteorra still had chili. WIN.
- Yesterday, Battery 1 took the hill for the Bridge battles. Lots of shooting, lots of fun. Went to Chi Point for 1600-2000, found out I was Crew Chief. Again. Nobody there but myself and a Chirurgeon-in-Training. On the other hand, the CiT was one of the Emergency Medicine docs. No problems with "supervising"&n bsp;him. Looking out the window, he saw a lady using the hose to wet her service dogs. One licked the nozzle, which the CiT noticed and mentioned. I grabbed my barber's bowl and made it into a doggie dish for a bit.
- Now, I'm off to my penultimate Chi shift.
