Notes: jagfanlj thought the pumpkin butter story needed a sequel. I apologize profusely for any inaccuracies because I am not much of a cook. There are seriously dozens of variations, though!

Sam caught a whiff of a heavenly smell as he passed the bunker’s kitchen, and he just had to see what was cooking. If only he had known what he was getting himself into...

“Are you making pumpkin pie?” he asked, taking a seat at the island.

“Better,” Dean declared, stirring a small pot of something on the stove. That was big talk coming from Dean, Mister Pie-is-the-king-of-all-foods himself. Sam only had to think for a moment before he recalled his brother’s disappointment at not finding any good pumpkin butter on their last trip.

“So, this is what you were researching so intently on the laptop! I could have sworn it was porn.”

Sam let his eyes scan the counter next to the stove top, and he realized Dean had used every single sauce pan and small pot in the well-stocked kitchen. A timer went off and Dean pulled a pan of large pumpkin chunks out of the oven.

“You’re actually using fresh pumpkin?” Sam asked in awe.

Dean leveled a pointed look at his younger brother. “Of course! I can’t really call it homemade if I use something I bought in a can, now can I?”

Dean set the pumpkin aside to cool and returned to stirring the pot.

Sam eyed the other pots and pans warily. “Exactly how much are you making?”

Dean shrugged. “I figure a couple of quarts oughta do for both of us, since you can’t home can this stuff.” He waved vaguely at the cooking vessels littering the counter, “This is all just to perfect the recipe, anyway.”

“Just how many recipes are you trying?”

“Well, I won’t know if I like ‘em if I haven’t tried ‘em! You can help me narrow it down.”

Dean pulled his current trial batch off the stove, grabbed a plate of toast and a bowl of oyster crackers Sam hadn’t noticed until just then, set them in front of Sam, and went back for a couple of pans.

“These two are the same recipe, only the one on your right has regular apple juice, and the other one has apple cider.”

Sam reached for a cracker, only to have Dean slap the back of his hand. “Put it on the toast, Sam. The crackers are for cleansing your palate.”

Sam decided to refrain from further comment to spare himself any additional violence. Dean was already sampling some of the cider batch.

Sam lost track of time as he was bombarded with spoonful after spoonful of variations on the same theme. “This one has raw honey, and this one uses maple syrup.” “This one is white sugar, and this one is brown.” “The first one has more cinnamon and less cloves, and this one has a pinch of sea salt.”

Despite the “palate cleansing” crackers, Sam was beginning to be unable to distinguish the subtleties that Dean was actually making notes about. He wasn’t certain how his older brother was keeping track of which one was which, either. One thing was for certain, though--they were all delicious!

Dean flipped through his notes for a few moments. “I need to make more toast.”

“Can I go now?” Sam asked hesitantly. “I’m not sure my opinion is making any difference.” Dean pursed his lips and raised one eyebrow. “Or not. I guess I’ll refill the cracker bowl.”
