As a shapeshifter, it was not strange to J’onn to alter his appearance. Keeping one form all the time, though, especially one not his base martian appearance, was unnerving.

It didn’t help that he had a deep-seated dislike for the man whose identity he had assumed. Hank Henshaw was not a man J’onn would ever have chosen to be, but the deception was necessary.

Perhaps, he thought to himself on occasion, it was not so much having to look like this hateful human but acting like him to maintain the facade.

On a certain level, he could understand the man’s point of view that all alien forces posed a danger to his planet. It was prudent to greet the unknown with caution, after all, but to refuse to accept any alien as potentially helpful was terribly shortsighted.

J’onn looked in mirrors every day and saw the mask he wore of the scowling face of a hardhearted man. He allowed vitriolic comments to pour from his lips even if he did not agree. He hunted down the escapees from Fort Rozz ruthlessly and gave no quarter.

He took pleasure in none of these things--perhaps re-imprisoning the worst Kryptonian prisoners--but he had made a promise to Jeremiah Danvers, and Hank Henshaw had what he needed to keep that vow. Hank had access to military databases and other resources that made the task of monitoring Jeremiah’s daughters much simpler that it would have been on his own, still on the run instead of hiding in the very heart of the DEO.

He watched the girls grow and begin lives of their own. Jeremiah had cautioned Kara well about maintaining her own mask, and J’onn was somewhat envious of how much easier it seemed for the young woman to maintain her own mask of normal humanity. At least, until she began to stop hiding all the time.

After so many years of constantly wearing Henshaw’s persona, J’onn almost feared he could no longer return to his own face permanently, even if he wished to do so. He did not expect what he felt when he allowed himself to remove that mask and resume his true form. He felt free.
