The old hag peered closely at him from that overstuffed chair she was sitting in. Of course, he had known that she wouldn't approve and had kept this information from her for a good reason. He hadn't wanted to involve anyone else in this whole situation--it was bad enough that he and his father had to deal with this horrible woman. Still, he somehow should have expected that the old hag would say something about it.

He should have known exactly what she would have said.

"You are a fool."

The words hit him hard, but Kaito refused to let it show and just met her eyes with a calm that he struggled to maintain as his hands clutched at the shoulders of the girl standing just beside him. A hand reached up to take his before he found the strength to respond with a bland tone, "Yeah, well, you can't say you were never one before or else my father, myself, or Aoko wouldn't be here."

The old hag was not amused.

Aoko looked over to him, seeming nervous by the tension that was filling the room.

Toichi, as per normal for this sort of thing, was leaning with his back against the wall between the two clashing forces that was Pandora and his son, watching and waiting.

Finally, Pandora sat back in her seat and put a hand to her chin as a wry smile crossed her old face, a face that was merely an illusion. Kaito knew well what that face really looked like. Cold stone. "Fair point, boy," she said with a bit of a laugh in her wisened voice. "Though I truly doubt you truly understand the significance of those actions you took to make this meeting between this girl and myself possible."

Kaito's shoulders tensed but he said nothing in return to those words. He knew very well that he had no idea what repercussions would come because of those actions. Ever since he had first become a vampire, he had only focused on the present, afraid to think too far ahead lest the idea of eternity consume him and drive him mad. Which could have been his original mistake in this whole mess. Still, he knew very well what would happen to Aoko when it all first occurred--at least, to a certain point.

It was useless to argue against the old hag's words. She knew more about this sort of thing than he did, having lived centuries upon centuries.

He couldn't even begin to grasp the idea of eternity, of what the consequences of his actions would bring about in the future.

Instead of refuting her words, Kaito merely said, lightly, "Even if I don't and even if I am a fool, it doesn't change the fact that she's here and she needs protection. Things are getting more dangerous by the day, and you know it is, don't you? You've seen this happen countless of times, only this time, you have more than just one person under your command, don't you, old hag?"

Pandora said nothing for a moment before whispering quietly, the silence of the room aiding in carrying her voice to their ears, "You still fight against me though I continue to protect you and the one who brought you into this. You still blame me for all of the events that have come to pass though all I have ever wanted was to live my time in eternity in peace. What is it that I can do to prove to you, Kuroba Kaito, to show you that I am not the monster you make me out to be?"

Only slightly surprised by the sorrowful tone in her voice, Kaito answered firmly, keeping his volume just as loud as it had been before, "You can do more than just hide in the shadows, waiting for the time that they find you and having my father and me protect you like we truly owe you something. You can let us find them out and take care of things before they have to go that far."

He paused, closing his eyes for a moment before taking a deep breath and steeling his nerves before saying the words he knew could possibly doom him, "You can keep Aoko safe until things are taken care of."

Kaito felt Aoko spin away from his hold, knew she was staring up at him with alarm and possibly confusion and fear. He could feel the surprise and even dread coming from his father even though he knew that Toichi would never let these things show on his face, not in front of that person.

He could sense the thoughtful, victorious silence coming from the old hag as she considered the request.

He awaited her answer.

"Done," she said with such finality that Kaito knew he had sealed his fate. "I will look after the girl."

Not opening his eyes, refusing to see even a glimpse of the triumph the old hag was sure to have been feeling, Kaito replied dully, "Thank you."

Aoko was safe for now, and Toichi and he were free to take their vengeance on those people who had hurt them the most.

But because of this, because he had dared to request this from Pandora, he had become further caught in that woman's tangled web. Not only that, but again, he had brought Aoko into things without explanation, without planning.

And he knew exactly what the consequences of such an action was.
