Title: Advice From An Older Woman
Characters: Tonks, Minerva and guest appearance from third character.
Challenge: Quill, Book and Lingerie

I am going to be honest. I don't know. I took a long nap somewhere in the middle of this. Not because it bored me, just cause I was tired. Maybe 45 mins.

Minerva McGonagall had settled down in her favorite chair with a cup of tea. Her long day was at last over. Comfortable in her green silk quilted robe and slippers, she had taken her hair down from its perpetual tight bun. After a little light reading and it would be time to retire to bed, she thought to herself.

A knock on the door changed all that.

Minerva saddened at the idea that a peaceful evening was going to be interrupted. She rose from her chair and went to the door. Upon opening it her frustration was replaced with wonder.

“Tonks,” Minerva said in astonishment. “What a surprise to see you.”

Before she was asked to come in Tonks hurried past Minerva. She kept her head down and the collar of her cloak was turned up. Tonks chose a cozy chair next to Minerva’s to sit down in.

Minerva closed the door and returned to her seat. She noticed that Tonks’ eyes seemed red as though she had been crying. The girl was fidgety and definitely upset with someone or about something. So although the intrusion was upsetting Minerva’s quiet night, she felt compelled to find out what was bothering her.

“Child, have you been crying?” Minerva asked with great concern in her voice.

Tonks sniffed a bit and then removed a handkerchief from her pocket. She blew her nose loudly. “A little.”

“Whatever happened to put you in this state?” Minerva asked now very interested in her guest’s plight. “Tell me and do not hold anything back.”

Tonks leaned back in the chair and blew her nose again. She hung her head down and stared at her hands. “Professor McGonagall, I really do not have anyone to talk to about this. My mother would be appalled. My father, well dad still does not see me as an adult. I really do not have that many friends and you are the only woman I know I could talk to
about this.”

Tonks sighed and looked up at Minerva. “I am in love.”

“And that is what make you weep like this. Great Merlin, this should be a time for joy, child.”

“He doesn’t even know I exist,” Tonks whispered dejectedly.

Minerva raised an eyebrow at her. “It Remus Lupin, is it not?”

Tonks’ head shot up and a panicked look flashed across her face. “It shows that much, does it?”

Minerva smiled at her guest. “I have seen a lot of young girls pining away for a boy or two over my years here at the school. The look never changes on their faces and you have that same dreamy stare every time he comes about. Have you told the man how you feel?”

Tonks shook her head in horror. “Oh no, he doesn’t see me that way. I am like one of the boys at the house. They treat me like a little brother, he and Sirius do. I am afraid he would laugh me off the street if I told him. Besides, I am such a clumsy one. He most likely be sick at the idea that someone the likes of me in love with the likes of him.”

Minerva comforted her with a pat of her hand. “You are a lovely girl, Nymphadora. You have a fine strong face and a pleasant figure. Well, it transforms as such. Maybe you just need to stop being one of the boys about him and become more of a girl.”

“How do I do that?”

“Well,” Minerva said slowly, weighing her thoughts. “perhaps a bit of a change of clothes would help. Maybe a little less of the baggy shirts and the old jeans. A nice frock once in awhile might catch his eye and imagination.”

Tonks was listening intently to her. “All right.”

“A new hair style would help and perhaps a bit of make up. Not too much, men do not like their women looking like painted tarts. Besides a pretty girl like you does not need much. A bit of rouge, a little lipstick would do.”

Tonks looked down at her hands once again. “I think it would be more like dressing up a sow. It won’t change me. I will still feel a bit like a clod whenever I am around him.”

Minerva laughed a little. “Then maybe you should start not with the outside appearance but what lies just under the surface.”

Tonks cocked her head to one side at this statement. “What do you mean?”

“Well, “ Minerva said quietly, “sometimes we women like to feel something soft and silky against our skins. Something only we know is there but makes us feel lovely. A sheer pink camisole or a bright blue satin slip or a black lace brassiere or...”

“Are you telling me to change my knickers?” Tonks asked incredulously.

Minerva sighed. This was going to be harder than what she had originally thought it would be.

“Not knickers, dear. Lingerie. Something nice and sexy to make you feel that way. Look, let me show you.”

Minerva reached down beside her chair to a stack of newspapers and magazines. She rustled about until she found exactly what she was looking for. Witches Wear Daily: Up to the minute styles and designs for the Modern Witch. She flipped through several pages as Tonks watched her.

“Here we go,” Minerva enthusiastically said and held up the page to Tonks. It was a model posed alluringly wearing a black lace bra and panties set.

“Oh my!” Tonks cried out turning pink in her cheeks. Suddenly, a loud rattling noise coming from the bedroom attracted both of the women’s attention.

“What’s that noise?” Tonks whispered.

“Mice, dear. I have had a bit of a problem with them as of late. I should be calling an exterminator out to fix that,” Minerva said, visibly annoyed. “Enough about that. What do you think about this?”

“I think I would feel right foolish running about with that on,” Tonks said with a giggle. “Catch a cold or such.”

“Nonsense,” Minerva sniffed. “I think you would look lovely in something like this. Gracious, a little bit of frilliness could make all the difference for you. Make you feel less like one of the boys and more like the beautiful young woman you are.”

Tonks smiled shyly. “Remus might like something like that, you think?”

“Of course he would. He is a man. He likes women, at least I think he does.” At that point Tonks got a worried look on her face and Minerva knew she had made a mistake.

“Yes, yes he does,” Minerva said quickly, “He was keen on quite a few when he was in school. But right now, it is not for him. It is for you. You need to just have a bit of confidence in yourself and who you are as a woman, that’s all.”

Tonks took the magazine and looked closely at the model on the page.” Where would someone buy something like this?”

“La Chez Adele in Hogsmeade five doors down from Gringotts. Go all the way back in the shop and look on the left. She has quite a nice collection of intimates there.”

Tonks shook her head in acknowledgment but continued to stare at the picture. “All right, I will have to stop by there soon.”

“Good. Now, it is getting a wee bit late..”

“I am sorry.”

“Don’t be child, “ Minerva consoled as she and Tonks walked toward the door. “I hope that I have been of some small help to you.”

Tonks stopped and hugged the older woman tightly. “You have been. I feel better about myself all ready.”

Tonks pulled away and a wistful look spread across her face. “Do you think there could be a chance for me here. Am I a fool for setting my cap for him?”

Minerva smiled kindly at her. “I think he would be a fool to pass up such a marvelous girl like you, truth be known.”

Another loud rattle that came from the bedroom startled both women.

“You have quite a rodent problem there, Professor,” Tonks said with a worried look on her face.

“Yes, I do,” Minerva replied under her breath. She regained her composure. “Good night, dear.”

Minerva gave Tonks a light kiss on the cheek. She waved as Tonks left and then gently closed the door. She returned to her chair and sunk down into it. She rubbed her forehead and laughed to herself. She sincerely hoped Tonks would take her advise but wondered if the young woman would. Oh, well she mused. I did my best.

“There have been many things I have been compared with, my dear Minerva. A mouse, however, has never been mentioned before.”

Minerva peeked around the back of her chair to see Severus Snape standing in the doorway to the bedroom. He was attired in his black satin dressing gown. She could see the glimpse of the gray silk pajamas she had purchased for him on his last birthday underneath the gown.

“You were a bit restless, “ she admonished.

“I was a bit bored,” he answered as he left the doorway and walked over to her. He picked up the magazine and flipped through the pages.

“Tonks and Lupin, is it?” he said in a mocking tone. “Now there is a pair that will beat a full house any day. Can’t see that.”

“You should not be so judgmental,” she said sharply. “No doubt there would be many who would not be able to see the two of us together either.”

“A point well taken, my lovely Minerva,” Snape said as he continued to search through the magazine’s pages. “So you sent her to Adele’s? Tonks surely will find something there to turn old Lupin’s head.”

“I am sure she will.”

“Good business woman, Adele. Discreet.”

“Very. Of course you should know.”

“I do, considering how much lingerie I have purchased for you over the years at her shop.”

“And each one is more lovely than the last.”

Snape stopped flipping the pages and stared at what he had been looking for. He pointed at the picture. “So do you think Adele would carry this item?”

“I am sure she would. Do you want a quill and parchment to send her an owl to make sure she does?”

“No, no,” Snape answered and dropped the magazine to the floor. “I prefer just stopping by. Are you ready for bed?”

“Yes, I am a bit tired.”

Snape smiled and extended his hand to her. “Then come along, Minerva. Oh, and do not be afraid. I have chased all the mice away.”

Minerva laughed and took his hand. “That is what I do love about you. You are a man of many talents.”

“And you my dear Minerva,” he said in a whisper as he drew her close, “are a woman of fine tastes.”
