A Promise of Forever

Chrono kneeled before Rosette with an established flair. One hand fished into his pants pocket, and fiddled with something Before he retrieved what he wanted. Rosette shifted, squirming in anticipation and tugging at her blindfold. "Just wait." Chrono baited, catching one pale hand and slipping something onto a wriggling finger. "There." He stated while reaching up to free her from the tied bandanna.

Rosette gasped and admired the ring on her finger. "Oh you devil you." She murmured and twisted the band closer to her knuckle. "Where did you get this?" Rosette inquired, turning to the male beside her. For a second she saw a flash of sadness on his face, but just as quickly it was gone.

"It was a gift from the only mother figure I have ever known." Chrono answered. "She gaved it to me as a heirloom, it was from her love, a promise." He added. Rosette stayed quiet, fiddling with the angel figurine on the band. "Now I give it to you, as a promise, a promise to protect you." He whispered and gently tucked a fly away bang of hers back behind her ear.

"Thank you Chrono." She said softly, gently twisting it to settle back into its original position.

A few years later Chrono laid bloody and broken before her, his breathing labored. His wounds glowed weakly, healing slowly, but on his face a tired smile. Rosette kneeled behind him, Joshua resting in her arms, one hand laying on a small, slowing, pocket-watch around her neck. They had saved the world, but what price, oh what price. At least Chrono would live on, his horns restored to him. Rosette found her world blurring, "I don't want to die here." She whimpered quietly.

She was lifted into strong arms, familiar the embrace was that she laid back. Rosette also noticed that Joshua was also enclosed into Chrono's embrace. Wearily, she strained to stay awake to stay alive and Chrono flew faster. Without conveying words, she made him drop off Joshua, she didn't want him to see her die. They each spared tears before the pair of siblings was separated. Chrono then retrieved her and took her to the cabin by the lake.

There they sat on the love seat on the porch watching the sunrise. As the world slowed, and her breaths came less frequently she laid her opposite hand on the tarnished ring. "Chrono, it's time." Rosette informed him, the world blurring around his face.

"No, I can stop this, I can protect you!" He shouted in denial.Raising a hand, she brushed away his fringe and smiled slightly.

"No, my dear devil, not even you can fight time." She whispered. Rosette laid a soothing hand on his lips forestalling hisobjections. "I'm happy, being here with you." Her last words dying on her lips, her fingers entwined with the ring.

"I promised you forever, and I was a fool," Chrono muttered to the cooling body, "I will carry your love and memory forever." He promised laying a gentle kiss on her brow. "They will know your story long after you are gone." And with that he was gone, the wind carrying him away.
