Author's Notes: Set at the end of events in the episode ‘Camp Fear’
Horatio watched the sun go down from his favorite spot on the beach; a myriad of golden hues spread across the sky, orange sparkling on the water like precious gems sent out to sea. He took a deep and cleansing breath, unwilling to allow the doubts again, chasing them away with thoughts of hope, of life, of warmth.
Of Tim.
Megan had quit; the work she did too much a constant reminder of what she’d lost, and he of all the CSI’s who worked the lab, knew just how painful that loss could truly be.
He could’ve written the very same note himself, identical to Megan’s. He nearly had when Raymond died; so close had he come to simply giving up and walking away from everything.
But there was nothing to be gained in that. No road could carry him far enough from what hurt him deep inside. He’d always carry it with him, that pain and grief for Raymond. It would stay, no matter where he went. He just had to learn to live with it, like he had when his mom had died.
One more grief to bear. One more pain to acknowledge. One more guilty bloodstain on his conscience.
The sunset turned his hair to burnished copper. The breeze tugged at his jacket. He slipped his glasses on, determined, certain, secure in the knowing that he was in the right place, doing the right thing, for the right reasons.
And he quietly asked the heavens for a sign that Megan too would one day come to find her place again. She thought that knowing peace with Sean’s death was the answer, and he truly hoped that for her at least, it would be.
As for his own heart, his own life, he still struggled, but as the sunset he was watching marked the passing of another so he smiled to himself, grateful to have gotten through it, and as he turned to walk back up the beach, Speed stepped from the falling shadows, held out a hand to guide him, and led him safely home.
