Author's Notes: Set during events in the episode ‘Kill Zone’ and told from Speed’s PoV

Speed couldn’t believe it. He didn’t want to believe it. He’d had a damn good idea of what Horatio was going to try, but it never occurred to him that he’d actually walk out there into the plaza without so much as a bullet proof vest, and offer himself up as the sniper’s next target. Horatio’s only protection was the knowledge that a man of such obvious skill and training as the one who’d been terrifying Miami, would never take the shot if he couldn’t make it perfect.

That didn’t stop Speed from quaking as he watched what unfolded. So what if Eric in the chopper was swirling up the wind and disturbing the trajectory? Didn’t matter that Calleigh and the SWAT team were heading to the roof at that very moment, because all Speed could see in his mind were those four bodies on the sidewalk and at any second, the man he loved could be the fifth.

He didn’t even blink. He couldn’t. He dare not even move.

The sniper was cold and deadly. With police closing in on all sides, he must’ve known he was caught, and there was no guarantee he wouldn’t risk the shot anyway and go out in a blaze of glory as a cop killer. But Horatio’s faith was so strong, his belief so unswerving, it acted almost like a shield that shone around him in defiance.

Speed just wanted it to be over. He just wanted Horatio to walk to away minus perforations. It seemed to take forever for confirmation to come through.

The sniper was caught.

That was when Speed finally drew breath again and thanked every god within earshot, that Horatio was safe. Challenge Chart
