The End
i. if they can break free from neverending chains of agony, so can we;

Fairy tales are not just stories to Satoshi.

He is just a boy, and so, fairy tales are very, very real to him.

He only hears each story once, but the plot and the setting and the characters are forever engraved into his soul, and they are always replaying in his head.

And so, there are no worries or images of future destruction placed in his mind. Instead, there is a dangerous path before him that he will overcome, no matter what. Instead, there are happy endings that he looks forward to every single day, and there are smiles that never fade, and he believes he can see his own every time he looks into the mirror with the slight crack that he cannot see, and perhaps refuses to see.

His mother notices this. And she, Rio Hikari, lets it all happen, lets her one and only son gather up his hopes and dreams and plan the life before him, when she knows it will all be struck by lightning from the limited sky in the end.

She doesn't know whether she should stay or turn around and make an attempt to fly away because of this, so she remains in one place, imagines her legs buried under a pile of unmoving feathers and pretends that she does not have a choice, and tries to find a story that will not cause further damag to the one closest to her.

ii. all of my regret will wash away somehow;

There is a story of a beautiful woman and a beast.

But the beast isn't really, truly a beast, Satoshi knows.

He has only heard the story once, but he thinks he knows the beast better than anyone else in the entire world.

The beast is simply misunderstood, and a little bit temperamental at times, but he always finds a way to sincere apologies and someone who accepts him for it all. And there is a rose he keeps close to his heart, a rose that he protects with his life. It's red, a bright red, like the color of ripe new blood, like the color of intense passion. And by the end of this true fairy tale, there is no bloodshed to be seen at all anymore.

And so, Satoshi knows this is what will happen in his life, too, because there is a beast within him and everything always turns out all right in the end.

He explains to Rio at one point that she should not despise Krad, despite how evil he seems to be, because his own rose still has that tint of crimson, of blood, but it will disappear soon. He does not make it a promise that will increase the chance of her believing him, because he thinks that she already knows this is true, and that she just does not know how to show it. He tells her he will no longer deny Krad from emerging from him, because if he is never released, how will their happy ending be found?

Rio watches her son every night as he stares out the window and dreams and loves and cherishes, and then falls to the ground, writhing in agony. She watches as the wings tear his clothes to pieces and cause the pain to shoot through his spine and eventually his entire body, and she watches the white, supposedly pure feathers disperse and make their mark on the world, never wanting to fade away into darkness.

And every night, she throws the torn clothes away so Satoshi does not see it, so he does not gain any more false hope by knowing Krad has made it one step closer to the end he believes in so strongly. And every night, she collects all the feathers she can find and adds it to the pile to keep her from fleeing in the direction she desperately wants to go.

iii. would you find it in your growing heart to make this go away?;

There is a story of a sleeping girl and a prince who rescues her.

And Satoshi thinks that this story belongs to his mother more than anyone else.

He has only heard this story once, but he remembers all the details, and questions Rio constantly.

He has come to notice that his mother never speaks of her past, and that she never answers him when confronted about it. Also, he feels he knows more about the Hikari family than she does because it seems to him that she cannot remember. Cursed and broken and ever so fragile, his family is the cause of too much pain, the cause of too many wonderful pieces of art that yearn for a heart and a soul and, if luck will come to their side, both of them. And so, it seems plausible to Satoshi that his mother was not awake and aware of her life back then, or her memory had been erased somehow and she cannot recall anything.

Either way, he thinks she has found a way out through his father. His father, after all, had fought his way through the battle with their family of neverending destruction, and had won her heart. And even if he is gone at the moment, he will return soon, very soon. He asks Rio about it, just to see her bright, joyful reaction. He asks if his father is her prince charming, the one who saved her and woke her from her slumber that was meant to last forever and ever. Rio just smiles slightly, says nothing, and leaves the room, silently hoping the questions never come her way again.

And she gathers all the feathers she has collected over the years and places them on the empty side of the bed. She places them on soft pillows in a position that she thinks will bring them comfort and sweet dreams. She gets into the bed and says good night to nothing at all and turns off the lights, and wraps one arm around the white feathers as best as she can, because it is all that she has on this cold, cold night, and for many more.

iv. this path of destiny is all i own;

There is a story of a girl who has a life where nothing ever goes right until a strange amount of fortune comes her way.

And, with all things carefully thought out, Satoshi firmly believes that his family's curse can end with its own unexpected twist of fate.

He has only heard the story once, but he looks forward to the day where he can see the phantom thief he is destined to destroy.

The phantom thief has been plaguing the Hikari family for centuries, stealing and sealing their works of art for no other reason than to protect himself and his tamer. Countless members of his family have tried to change this, have tried to keep the millions of people on the planet from seeing him fly through the night sky on black wings that offer nothing to be desired. Each time, they have failed, leaving the world to depend on the next generation of both families.

This can and will be changed, Satoshi knows. The phantom thief will be caught by one of the Hikaris one day, and the criminal will suffer the same fate as the works of art he insists on stealing every time he obtains a new tamer. The phantom thief will be thrown away like a mere piece of garbage, sent to nowhere important at all, and eventually, forgotten, and everyone will move on with their lives and realize they have never been so glad before. As for him and his family, Satoshi knows they will be redeemed, the curse will be lifted, and they will no longer fear becoming close and growing together and just living life to the fullest.

Rio listens to this ending that is stuck inside of her son's mind, and is not sure what to believe. It is possible for this to happen, but it will not happen anytime soon, she thinks. All she really knows is that she never wants to discover that the white feathers have been stolen away from her and have been replaced with black ones, sending her into neverending darkness.

v. wouldn't it be nice to never be alone in this wasted life?;

There is a story of a woman who tries to make her son content and happy with his imprecated life.

And Rio knows that her own similar story must come to an end, but she does not know what she will do afterward.

She has heard the story countless times, as it is never out of sight or out of mind, and it terrifies her.

She cherishes every smile Satoshi sends her way, and remembers the rare moments that she had given him a hug or tucked him into bed to prove to herself that she really did love him, that she was just trying to do what she thought was best. She watches him leave for school every day, wondering if he will return home one day and never want to see her tense face ever again. She cautions him to watch for anyone and everyone around him, because no one else is to be trusted, as they might ruin his story somehow, someway.

Eventually, the ending comes. Satoshi returns home from school one day, tears falling from the sky and landing on his cheeks. He tells her that he had become too close to someone, and he does not mention who, because it does not matter, because he will never see the person again. He tells her that Krad made an appearance, that he had never tried so hard to fight back the homicidal words that came from his other half's bloodthirsty lips, and that he had never tried so hard to gain control over his own body. He tells her that he is now aware of the scars on his back, and that he had chosen to steal a piece of clothing to cover his own torn clothes and his back to try and convince himself that nothing was wrong, nothing was happening.

And he leaves without waiting for a response, without looking her in the eyes.

Rio falls to her knees, white feathers suddenly trying to fly away from her heartless self, trying to free themselves from the chains they had been forced to face. They are too far gone by the time she realizes this and tries to reach for them.

vi. insanity is all around us, will always be around us;

Fairy tales are not just stories to Rio.

She is just a human, and so, she tells them without really wanting to, because it makes Satoshi think his life is worth living, and Satoshi means the world to her.

She does not hear the story anymore, and hears nothing but her son's laughter and his hopeful words that she knows will never be the same again.

The snow white feathers are mostly gone now. Some still remain, however, and she thinks that they are just there because some part of his heart is still attached to her and it does not know how to let go. She will help him, she thinks sadly, but she thinks that, this time, it is truly for the best. She gathers what she has left of her shattered son and makes her way toward the window, the same window he had always used to gaze at the sun setting, to gaze at his faraway dreams. Opening the window with hesitation, she knows she cannot delay, and she allows the wind to take the feathers as far away as they can possibly go.

And now, there is her, and no one else. There is her own shallow heartbeat and her dark eyes that do not want to see anything at all anymore, and there are walls that allowed her son's sweet voice to echo in the past, over and over again into her ears like a very short song, one that she wished could last for eternity. There are pieces of arts placed upon the walls, ones that are not possessed by her family's magic. Satoshi had insisted they be put up, and she just wants to take them and crush them, and scream and ask why her ancestors could not create art with an actual human heart.

She cannot stay here.

And so, Rio abandons her life because she cannot stand this place, this place with tearful memories and false hope and fake smiles and hearts that are never whole, all intertwined to make up the fate she had built for herself.
