For Nishikido Ryo, the definition of home has been more or less vague during the past years. When he entered Johnny’s Entertainment, his actual home, where his family was, lost a bit of its importance, as he stayed in the practice rooms later and later as time passed. Then came NEWS, and he started to travel between Tokyo and his hometown. Back then, the only thing that reminded him of home was Uchi. Little by little he formed himself another home in the capital.
Then Uchi got suspended and Ryo had to do own his own. With the help of his friends and family, the latter meaning a lot of things, he dealt with the situation. But the last straw that broke him down was NEWS’ suspension. From that day, he couldn’t bring himself to think of Tokyo as home, no matter how hard he tried.
During the hiatus, not once did he go to Tokyo. No, he stayed in Osaka, his hometown. He saw the other NEWS’ members occasionally, but they always came to him. And really, they rarely even came to see him, but to work. Therefore, most often he saw Yamapi, just as usual.
The only member who came to town ever on personal business was Shige. Ryo and Shige weren’t exactly best friends, if they could be called even friends. But when Shige called him, shy on the other end of the line, asking him out to dinner, Ryo felt something heavy in his heart. Without a second of hesitation, he accepted the offer.
Even if it had been only a few months, Ryo could see a tremendous change in the younger man - yes, Shige had finally become a man. And cut his stupid hair. When Ryo walked in the restaurant and looked for Shige, he nearly didn’t even recognize him. But he did, hand reaching immediately for Shige’s dark brown, spiky hair, ruffling it and successfully annoying the man. Nevertheless, Shige responded with a smile as he swatted Ryo’s hand out of his hair.
Dinner went smoothly, Ryo was surprised by how much Shige, the person that used to be the definition of quiet for him, talked and how interesting he found what the younger said. Ryo had never thought that Shige could be this much fun.
When they were about to part, Ryo asked the question that had been haunting his thoughts throughout the evening.
“Shige, why are you in Osaka?”
“Oh, there’s no actual reason. I just missed it,” Shige answered with a faint smile. For some reason the answer made Ryo smile and his heart thump a little louder. Then Shige turned to him, with a full smile, “Well, I’ll see you around.” And with that, Shige took off literally skipping down the road. Ryo let out a little laugh as he looked at the retreating back of skipping person he had briefly thought of as a man. Now, he wasn’t so sure anymore. With a sigh, he took off in his own direction, the memory of a smiling and laughing Shige in his heart.
During the following months, Shige came to Osaka nearly every weekend, and every time they went out. Be it dinner or clubbing or whatever, Ryo found that he actually quite enjoyed the younger man’s presence. They grew closer and started to know all sorts of things about each others. Ryo laughed as he listened to Shige ramble about a stupid professor on the phone, throwing in random impressions that were totally out of subject.
When his manager called him and told NEWS would be returning, he didn’t know how he should react to the information. Sure, he could see Yamapi and Shige more, exhaust himself to death, and… return to Tokyo. That he didn’t know how to do.
Out of necessity, he did return to Tokyo. He was welcomed with open arms, but he felt alienated in the big town. What put him through the hard time was Shige’s reassuring smile and comforting words.
As Ryo looked for himself and tried to get comfortable in Tokyo again, slowly the relationship between Ryo and Shige transformed and became something more. It started with innocent touches and grew to light pecks, to passionate kisses, and ended up in Shige’s king size bed.
Before, Ryo used to laugh at the saying “Home is where your heart is”, but now he actually started to understand those simple words. So now, if you ask him where his home is, he would answer, “Where ever I make it”, avoiding the clichéd saying. If Shige was asked the same question he would say that he agreed with Ryo, while glancing at Ryo who would be smiling at him.
Afterwards, when Ryo would be waiting for Shige to finish packing, he’d grab the younger man’s hand and say:
“Come on, let’s go home.” No, officially, it wasn’t his home, but that’s what he made it, because Shige is where his heart is. Shige is the one who holds onto his heart, no matter what.
