Dolls & writing

Weekends always go by far too quickly, don't they? I hoped to get some things done doll-wise this weekend and luck was with me.I didn't get everything done that I wanted to, but eh *shrugs* that's life.

I'd mentioned a goodly while back that I ordered an Argonautica Little Kio for my b'day as my present to me. Well, he finally was delivered to me about 2 weeks ago. He's adorable but he was also very, very smooth in the joints. That sounds like that should be a good thing, but with dolls, it's not, really. Extremely smooth joint interiors means that the pieces of resin slide against each other freely. Again, should be a good thing, right? Nope. You need some friction in the joints to provide "grip" to make the joint steady/stable/able to lock in position. Heavy elastic or tightly stringing the doll can help but sometimes, there's nothing else to be done but to provide the required grip.

Nacre (pronounced nay-CREE; I may change the spelling slightly to reflect that) had the amazing swivel legs/feet/waist. His arms were fine and didn't require any work. I pulled out my trusty low-temp hot glue gun and proceeded to apply a very thin layer of hot glue to the socket part of his joints at waist, hips, knees and ankles. He's still a little finicky to make stand unaided, but he can do it now without his knees collapsing or his hips spinning his legs around.

He's also got real pearls for his eyes. One is a Tahitian black pearl and the other is a southseas champagne pearl. The champagne pearl is a blind eye and I'm in the process of writing how that happens. His eyes were originally 2 different colours (like Wu-Tyr) but I found the colour difference between the 2 pearls so much that the champagne looked like a blind eye. I could've gone with a grey pearl instead of black or even grey instead of champagne, but I like the symmetry of the story that explains his blind eye.

This is Nacre:

He is a little difficult to photograph due to his transparent resin, but he's really an awesome sculpt and I'm really happy with my purchase.

In other doll news, I did purchase the Cass forearms for Wu-Tyr and they're on their way to me now. I'm pretty excited about that even though I won't have the body that he needs for some time as the CAN$ sucks super hard and I'm saving for a trip later this year. That's okay though as this hobby is all about the waiting. And in the laughing hysterically category, I was on DoA and saw that somebody just posted a pair of Cass fin ears for sale. They'd be really cool for Wu-Tyr, but they're $90US (before shipping) and that translates to $125CAN (I wasn't joking about the CAN$ sucking hard) and I don't think I can afford that just because my trip will be to the US and I basically need to save double the US$ price in CAN$ to account for crappy dollar+exchange rate. There's also a GO (group order) for Dollmore where the person running the order will bring the parts to AnimeNorth so I wouldn't have to pay additional shipping. I need to get some dollpire hands for Wu-Tyr as well. Not sure if I'll take part in the GO as I can get the hands anytime I want as they're not limited. The Cass ears... limited parts and like the forearms, once they're gone, they're gone and good luck finding them again.

Been thinking of changing one of my character's names. I've never been 100% satisfied with it even though he's had it for over a year now. I'm really picky on names and this one has bugged me. Possibly because he was a bit of an impulse purchase at the doll convention (DearMine Oscar) and I needed to figure out where he fit into my assorted worlds. I know where he fits and his role and I'm happy with that. But... his name is nagging at me. Possibly that's why I haven't been able to finish writing the story with him and his lover. My brain works in weird ways and if the name was bothering me on a subconscious level all this time, it would certainly explain my difficulty in finishing the story as I won't even start writing something without the names being right.

I also have a story completed but I'm not sure what I'll do with it. It's in the Big Mystic Smoke world (the same one as where Blind Desire takes place) but the characters are completely new. It's a pretty good size, too, at a tick over 19K. Mains are a vamp and Incubus. The Incubus also appears in my forever in the writing stage, The Ugly Incubus, but only as a background character. However, I thought he was so damn interesting/hot, he demanded a short story of his own.

I am also still writing Saraf and Edenlei's story although that is nearing completion. It'll be novel-length when I'm done, something I hadn't planned on *laughs*. After that's finished, I want to write Wu-Tyr and Yalaren's story.

writing, bjd
