What I Say? You Don't Wanna Know

When it comes to music, I listen to the 80’s a lot, mostly because I was an 80’s kid, but also because songs back then actually had a meaning.

I heard this new song the other day, Jason Derulo - Whatcha Say.

Of course the hook comes from one of my favorite indie songs, Hide and Seek by Imogen Heap. But what got me thinking were the lyrics. At one ( Read more... )

I was tapping my feet to some catchy tune on the radio the other day, and then I listened to the lyrics:
"...shut your lips. Do the Hellen Keller and dance with your hips."
Normally I'm not easily offended by song lyrics, but that one in particular made me shake my head in disgust.

I know that song, and that was my first thought too. How are people not offended?

Just fyi though, he says, do the helen keller and TALK with your hips.

But yeah, I thought the same thing as you.

I took you for an 80's gal...since you wear your sunglasses at night. ;)

I erm... like that song.

Kind of work safe video (f-bomb dropped):

I don't remember how to link but you might like the song more after you watch that. It kind of explains the 'meaning' (I use that term lightly because it is a pop song and not meant to be deep) of it a little bit.

Or not. YOU decide!

I saw the video...I still think it was uncalled for. The overall message of the song is fine, it's better than a lot of crap these days.

Still, Helen Keller could only "talk with her hips" because of being blind and deaf. While I's sure she didn't want sympathy, it's not something that should be made fun of. In fact telling someone to do the "Helen Keller" should be intended as a compliment. She was strong and learned to function in our world without sound or sight, and she did it better than many who have both can do. In this case, I don't think it was intended as a compliment...

To me, it shouldn't be used like that. It comes off as derogatory, even if it wasn't intended. But even bad PR is PR right?

Hey, that's just my OP.

Oh, I agree it was totally uncalled for. And it was definitely meant to be derogatory. The song itself is pretty offensive, what with the 'don't trust a ho' and etc. But that video kinda turned it around for me. The guy's an ass and the girl gets her revenge. Good stuff.

Honestly, I find Lady Gaga and Britney Spears to be SO much more offensive.

I agree the video is a good message, she gets hers in the end. I learned that lesson myself in life. The ugly duckling became the swan type thing.

Don't even get me started on Spears or Gaga....or Kanye West for that matter. heh.
