When it comes to music, I listen to the 80’s a lot, mostly because I was an 80’s kid, but also because songs back then actually had a meaning.
I heard this new song the other day, Jason Derulo - Whatcha Say.
Of course the hook comes from one of my favorite indie songs, Hide and Seek by Imogen Heap. But what got me thinking were the lyrics. At one point he says, “You caught me cheating” but then goes on to say, “When I become a star we’ll be living so large, I’ll do anything for you”.
When I heard that I did a rewind just to see if I missed something. Basically the song is about him cheating and her wanting to leave, he is pleading for a second chance.
“When the roof caved in and the truth out, I just didn’t know what to do. But when I become a star we’ll be living so large…”
So let me get this straight…you cheated on her, but it’s okay because you are going to be famous?
Am I the only one who really has a problem with these lyrics? Seriously, if you haven’t heard the song, look it up. We Americans seem to wonder why our children are fucked up. Our supposed role models, people who inspire our children, have a twisted idea of morality.
I don’t know why, but something about that song just bothered the shit out of me. Maybe I am an old prude or something. It’s a decent beat, pretty generic today, but not bad. The lyrics just ruin it for me.
Of course, these days…who the hell hears the lyrics anyway? Most pop music is just one or two lines repeated for four minutes. I’m going back to the 80’s...
