Turns out Las Vegas is only 3 and a half hours from here. After turning 21 on wednesday and going to class thursday morning, Shayne and I headed to one of the craziest places i've ever been.
We got to our hotel, the El Cortez, at 2pm and got settled into the room. After that, we walked down to the strip and visited a few casinos to play some slots and drink some beers. After drinking said beers and losing a few bucks we walked back to our casino where the real fun began.
Our hotel package included this little booklet that came with a free drink, a free meal, and $5 worth of free slot play. We got our beers and money and played for like another hour before going back up to the room. There we consumed something special and let Vegas take over. As soon as the elevator doors opened and i saw all the lights and people, and heard all the sounds i was in a different place. the intricate pattern on the rug was incredible and so was everything else in the place, and things remained interesting for the rest of the night.
We went to get some sandwiches from the subway in the casino and had an interesting encounter. There were two middle-aged women working there and shayne and i were the only two customers there at the time. Shayne got his sandwich first and then i started to order mine. The women kept looking at me and seemed to take a long time assembling my cold cut combo. After a while one said to the other, "look at his eyes." i'm thinking, "oh no, are they really that dilated? what do they know?" Just after i start to think these and similar thoughts, the other lady replied, "yeah, they remind of bobby(or billy or something)" then they both reminisced about this guy and looked at me as they sighed with light hearts. being hit on by middle-aged women is weird. but i was flattered.
after that we went back up to the room and peered over the balcony for what seemed like hours. we could see lights and heard music from all over the town and couldn't look away. the worst that rap music has to offer was being played from inside the strip club across the street and we just stood there watching everybody and everything move to this music, it was really quite funny.
we ended up going back into the room and remained there for the most of the rest of the night lost in our own imagination and bittersweet madness.
after all was said and done by the time we left at 1 pm today i had only spent $12. once i won $30 on a quarter slot machine and twice won $9 on video poker. figuring in drinks and food and gambling i'd say i did fairly well. overall it was a great birthday celebration.
