Part One

Three suicide attempts later and Jack was fed up, he was done. He was done with this fucking angel ruining his death. It wasn’t like he even cared; he’d only show up when Jack tried to join him in death.

“Alex, just fuck off!” The words ripped from his chest and tore up Alex in just moments as he threw the tied noose at the brunette

“Jack, please...” The angel bit his lip, knowing there wasn’t anything he could really say to make any of this mess better. He was under oath not to tell Jack that he was his soul mate. He could never tell him the reason why he kept saving his life time after time. To Jack he was nuisance, getting in the way of his un-thought-out plans, ruining the only chance he thought he had to be happy.

“No, just please leave me alone! I can’t deal with this any longer. I couldn’t fucking deal with it to begin with!” Jack shouted, angry and upset, tears stained his cheeks as the frustration festered inside of him.

“I can’t let you die.” Alex said softly, full of empathy because he could see it, he could feel the other’s pain. He knew how much it was killing Jack… being here full of hopelessness. All he wanted was to escape and Alex was standing in his way.

“Why! Why do you stop this? I don’t want saving, I don’t want you saving me!” Jack was on the verge of becoming hysterical as he threw a mug on the kitchen counter at the angel who ducked of its way. Alex tried to rationalize, as an idea came to mind.

“I, what if I stay with you?”

“W-what?” Jack looked up and stared straight into what he thought was the angel’s soul.

“Will you stop trying to kill yourself if I stay here on earth with you?” Alex elaborated and Jack wiped away his tears on the back of his hand, afraid to speak but afraid to miss the opportunity of the best offer anyone could give to him.

“I... Uh, what?” Was all he could manage and Alex sighed heavily,

“I can’t tell you anymore than this, I can’t, I mean I physically can’t let you die. I don’t have a choice but to come and stop you from trying to take your own life and it’s, basically my job to make sure you’re okay. So, I can stay here until you’re, you know, okay.”

“What do you mean you have to? Why? Why won’t you just let me-“ Jack started to sob into his hands dejectedly, letting his emotions wash over his body. Alex stepped forward and wrapped Jack up in his arms and wings making soft shushing noises into the other’s hair.

“It’s okay, you’ll be okay.” Alex murmured into Jack’s hair reassuringly.

“It’s n-not okay though Alex, you d-don’t understand how badly it hurts me just breathing. Nothing around this life is ri-right, something’s missing and I’m s-so lost I c-can’t stand it here.”
The words splinted Alex’s heart and he held his soul mate tighter,

“I know, trust me, I know”

Two months later and anyone who had known Jack Barakat before wouldn’t have known him now. He smile on his face was radiant, his life had completely changed, Alex had completely changed him. It was a Tuesday morning and it Jack’s day off from his new job at an art gallery ten minutes drive away, he was sleeping peacefully as Alex shifted next to him, his dreams of heaven getting to him and he knew it was time.

Jack awoke less an half an hour later to see the empty space beside him, sitting up he heard his angel singing absentmindedly somewhere else in the apartment, their apartment. Jack honestly thought that a smile would never touch his lips again, that the hopeless black hole in his soul would swallow him whole before he’d ever feel alive again. But ever since the angel had been living with him Jack was happy, he felt alive, he didn’t want to die, the thought never crossed his mind. He owed his life to the beautiful creature known as Alex, he’d so anything for him.

Getting out of bed Jack wondered into the kitchen to see his angel half naked, wings delicately folded as he was cooking pancakes.

“Morning.” Jack grinned, enjoying the sight of Alex and the smell of the cooking pancakes.

“Afternoon, actually.” Alex corrected him with a small smile, Jack shrugged it off and tried in vain to hugs the other from behind,

“Alex.” He whined, dragging out the “A”. The angel tutted fondly and retracted his wings so his soul mate could embrace him properly.

“Your fault if I burn myself” Alex grumbled quietly as he moved the pan carefully over the flames. Jack didn’t reply and simply buried his face into the angel’s soft hair affectionately.

After breakfast, which was more like lunch considering the time, Alex said something that made Jack’s heart stop.

“I, have to go back to heaven.” Alex couldn’t meet his soul mate’s heartbroken eyes as he stuttered out the confession. Jack felt consumed with distress, anguish taking over his every fiber. Tears were flooding from Jack’s eye before he could attempt to stop him, the pain in his chest was the worst physical pain he’d ever felt in his life. It hurt worse than all times he’d bruised and bleed over his depressive live, it hurt more than almost dying.

“I’m so, so sorry Jack. I, if I could do anything to stay here, I would, I promise you, I would. But there are laws, and oaths, and promises and I,.. I can’t stay here any longer. Look, you’re saved. You don’t need me any longer. You’re happy now.” Jack wanted to scream at his angel, he wanted to throw him against the wall and shout until his lungs gave out that the only reason he was happy was because he was with him, he was the reason Jack wanted to live.

Alex stood shakily from the couch they were both sitting on and turned away from his beautiful, broken human.

“One day you’ll understand, just keep living and you’ll find me.” Alex promised and left without another look back, the heartbreaking sound of Jack’s cries left imprinted deeply on his heart.

Jack barely registered the angel’s departure. He was so full of upset, betrayal, confusion, hurt, anger, he couldn’t hear over his sobbing, see over his tears, feel over the shaking of his body willing his angel to come and save him this time, but he never did.

He searched ragingly through his apartment and soon found that, that damn angel had made it damn impossible to die in there. Without a second thought he left the apartment, slammed the door shut and practically ran to the bridge where he knew the water would be crashing underneath. No one tried to stop him as climbed to the ledge, not that they could have anyway. And where was his angel now? Huh? That gorgeous winged being had saved him from himself so many times but he needed him the most, where was he now? Jack spat bitterly into the hungry waters before, as if to tempt the unforgiving waves. Little did he know, his angel was taking a battering from the God’s, he’d broken the rules, he’d said too much. They were breaking him just like Baltimore had broken Jack. They were taking away his wings and exiling him back to living.

Weightless. That was all Jack could feel as the air caught in his lungs, and as he crashing into the waves he welcomed the overbearing pain in his chest because it didn’t hurt nearly as much as losing his angel did.
