I actually quite like being a student. I know, you're very surprised.

This week:

- I realised that, in the foyer of a building I go to classes in roughly four times a week, there's a random door halfway up the wall. Ten feet off the ground. Just, you know, hanging there, in the brickwork. Now, I realise that the second floor must have extended further once upon a time, but whatever's in the room beyond that door is going to prey on my mind for a long, long time.

- I finished and handed in a 2000-word essay on the Athenian Empire (though, um, it was due at 5 and I managed to forget and only remembered once I was on my way home with groceries. Yes, I took sausages and milk and eggs to the uni computer lab, what of it). He said use primary sources, so I used primary sources, and I'm pretty proud of how well supported and to-the-point I managed to make it. Especially since:

- I finally got my Film essay back, and the mark was unexpectedly horrible. Especially considering I'd been quite proud of it. Still, the kindness of the comments softened the blow, and they were pretty bang on the money: in attempting to talk about everything that was remotely relevent in the 3000 word limit I'd been given (ironically, it had initially seemed an insurmountable wordcount), I'd managed to make most of my points completely incoherent. Sigh. I hope I do a lot better on the next one. (Re: the above point - it's probably not a coincidence that I got this essay back right before I started writing the Classics essay. MAKE YOUR ARGUMENTS COHERENT AND UNAMBIGUOUS was written across my brain in letters of fire.)

- I got acquainted with my Film lecturer's cat, a lilac Siamese cross (I think) named Daisy. Daisy, it should be noted, is an extremely muscular tomcat, though no less a whore for scritches and warm laps. And yes, said lecturer (the mighty Tim) is the one who gave me that mark, so at least if I get a crappy grade on my second essay, I know what to hold to ransom. Here, kitty, kitty...

And here's where I admit I'm kind of torn. I really like being a student; I would like to stay in uni a little longer than is strictly necessary; I worry about how useful a BA in Film and English Literature will actually be for getting a job. Classics is fun, though somewhat more strict and difficult a discipline than textual analysis, though that is kind of thrilling, and the lectures are SO INTERESTING GAH, and there may be an excursion to Greece at some point. Film is completely awesome and I like the lecturers, but there are first years who have more practical experience than me and frankly I'm a shit director - however, I would like to get involved in other fields, like editing and scriptwriting, which would also carry over into my one true love, comics. My dad thinks it would be awesome to have someone in the family with a Classics degree; I think doing post-grad honours courses in Film would be better than a piddling BA. So I put it to you:
