Fleas in yarn

Aug 19, 2008 17:02

This is a bit of an odd question. My roommate's dog brought home some fleas and we're having the house fumigated tomorrow (because tey aren't roaches they aren't covered by the lease either). I haven't seen any fleas in my yarn, but I know that doesn't mean they aren't there ( Read more... )

Fleas aren't really likely to be living in the yarn, since there's nothing to eat in there and nothing edible really passing by either. Keep treating the environment (carpet is a big one) and, especially, treat the dog.

this might be a good read

personally i would lay all of the yarn out on the table when the fumigation happens, and wash the yarn before you knit it up (even cold water will do it) if the chemicals make you nervous

I thought maybe you could freeze them, googled that and found some other interesting things that might work. Most of these explain what to put on the dog, I picked out the things that might work for your yarn as well.

Try rubbing Brewer's yeast through your pet's coat. The more the better to send the fleas flying! (And then vacuum like mad!)

You can also kill fleas by freezing them. This can be useful for a vacuum bag that you want to reuse.

Drop the fleas in soapy water (not sudsy) or alcohol to kill them, I've never felted anything, I know it involves soapy water or something, so this might not work.

And that's pretty much all I can find.

All I can suggest is sticking your yarn in freezer safe bags and then sticking them in the freezer for a day or two. But you'll still want to meticulously look over your yarn after you take it out of the freezer. Best of luck!

If you're worried about them being in the yard you can always freeze the yarn. Literally. The Fleas will can not handle below freezing. Put your yarn in the freezer for at a day or two.

When animals have mites or fleas it's common the freeze their toys and bedding to kill them.
