Title: Twenty Vaguely Interrelated Things you Never Knew About Matthew and Guy
Author: kybok
Characters: Matthew, Guy, mention of various others (Leila in particular)
Word Count: 687 (wow that's short...)
Rating: PG
Disclaimer/Notes/Whatever: FE7 is totally not mine. If so, there would have been a series out by now. I'll admit I'm a bit nervous about these... ^_^'

1. By the age of seven, Matthew was an orphan. It had not been war but hunger that had stolen from him his mother (his father had left before he had even been born). He determined at that point that he would never go hungry again.

2. At ten, Matthew could steal anything he wanted from anyone. He ate well.

3. The thing Matthew remembered most about his mother was how she would always insist that he work for what he was given. He supposed that it was hard enough work to steal, especially considering how hard it was to not be caught. Of course, that probably hadn't been quite what she meant.

4. Guy found out the hard way that Matthew remembered this when he had to sign his life away for food. Of course, at the time he had just thought it was a mean streak in the thief.

5. Guy's eyesight was terrible, the real reason behind his never learning to shoot. His mother's poor health as she carried him had seen to that.

6. Guy's hearing, however, was exceptional; he could hear his enemy's movements and counter quicker than lightning. Too bad for him that swords were not a valid primary weapon for a warrior in his clan.

7. Matthew had wound up at Castle Ostia when he tried to sneak in and steal something (anything). It was his way of proving himself. He was caught by a simple cleaning maid as he ghosted into the kitchens. He was brought to Lord Hector, to beg for his life. Hector, however, had other ideas. "Anyone that can successfully get into the impregnable fortress that is Castle Ostia deserves some kind of an award," he had said, laughing heartilly.

8. His skills had been immediately considered by Hector, and Matthew was put under the watchful eye of a woman named Leila to train.

9. Matthew ran away several times. The trouble with running away, though, was that one needed a place to go. He suspected that Hector knew this, the only reason for his being able to run away at all. He also suspected that he was being watched during his excursions.

10. Guy met Matthew the third time he ran away.

11. Guy, too, was running away, but he was running away from a clan that didn't want him.

12. Sitting next to the campfire with the thief, Guy wondered momentarily if this was what love was.

13. He later realized that it was just the feeling of a full stomach after weeks of starving in the wilderness.

14. When Matthew again met Guy, in the ranks of Eliwood's Elite, he felt a warm feeling. The same feeling he felt with Leila. But, that was ridiculous. He had only been with Guy for a day. He had been with Leila for years. He squelched it down with all those other useless, nonsensical emotions that only served to confuse him.

15. Guy would never quite forgive Matthew for bringing his favors into play to coerce him to join the army. It was cold, but far be it from Guy to refuse. He couldn't lie, one of the few things he had picked up from his clan before he left.

16. Leila's murder came as a shock to both. Guy never knew her, but he respected what he heard of her from Matthew, which had been quite a lot.

17. Matthew never did let go of Leila. He sought comfort in Guy, but felt as if he were betraying her memory.

18. Once Matthew did realize that Leila would have him move on, the guilt stopped (though it did sometimes come back for brief moments), but the nightmares never did. They only got worse with Jaffar's addition to the troop.

19. Lucky for him, Guy was there all the way.

20. The swordmaster could never replace the woman that had taught him so much; how to see and not be seen, how to hear and not be heard, and the lesson he valued the most, how to love and be loved. Matthew, however, made the most of Guy's companionship. Leila would have wanted him to be happy, even if it wasn't with her.
