Title: The Princess and the Divisions
Author: kaeru_chan AKA Kia
Character/Pairing/Group: Inoue Orihime and the Gotei-13
Rating: PG
Disclaimer/Notes/Whatever: I don't own all these people. If I did, I would either be insane or Kubo Tite. Most of this takes place around the recovery week in Soul Society, so spoilers for this entire arc. I blame Tsuki and Katie and Shini for this. It's all their faults.

1. Orihime tried her hardest to find out the name of the First Division's vice-captain, but failed every time; someone would walk by and interrupt him whenever he was about to tell her, or there would be a loud shriek from the Fourth Division, courtesy of the 11th Division, or Ichigo would run by screaming with Kenpachi hot on his heels, screeching about fighting...

At one point, a very frustrated girl finally stalked up to Yamamoto, her eyes wild, and wailed "What's his NAAAAAAAME?" before she was hauled off by Chad.

2. As much as Orihime loved food, having Oomaeda tell her he'd like to "eat her up with a side of wasabi" with his mouth full of half-chewed food put her off eating for the next two days, until Ishida finally lured her out with cucumber-chocolate soba noodles.

3. To Orihime, smiles were beautiful and deserved to be shared with the world. However, the smile on Ichimaru Gin's face when he cut off Jidanbou's arm was one of the most terrifying things she had ever seen.

4. There was something about Inoue Orihime that reminded her of herself, Unohana thought, watching the girl determinedly work on each and every last patient until she'd worn herself out to the point of exhaustion. She hated to see others in pain so much that she would willingly put herself through Hell just to prevent it.

She only hoped the young healer wouldn't grow to be exactly like her and be betrayed by those she had once thought of as close friends. She didn't want the girl's innocence to be ripped away from her, just like that. Something in Orihime's eyes whenever she comforted a patient told her she had already suffered enough.

5. When Orihime saw Aizen's smile just before he disappeared into the sky, she amended her previous decision. While Gin's smile had been twisted, Aizen's smile had been gently amused, and was therefore more dangerous.

6. Realizing that the one who was allowing Rukia to be killed was none other than her own brother made Orihime feel sick. The circumstances had been different when Sora had sought her life, but that only made it worse; she could find no reason or excuse for what Byakuya was doing.

When Rukia clasped her brother's hand in hers, only Ishida heard his classmate's quiet sigh of relief.

7. Once she had seen Komamura in all of his foxy glory, Orihime beamed and insisted that he let her brush his fur. That would have been bad enough, but she'd also asked him in front of his entire division, and with those beseechingly large gray eyes of hers...

He left the division with glossy fur, a scowling countenance, and a white ribbon tied around one twitching ear.

8. Orihime thought Shunsui was a very fascinating person, who had some interesting thoughts on the glory and grandeur of love and she thought his pink coat was very gallant. Upon that subject being brought up, Shunsui promptly draped it around her and declared her "The Flower Princess of Pink and Noble Stature."

"I would remove her from his vicinity as soon as possible before he pulls out the sake," Nanao recommended to the Quincy as the captain plunked his straw hat on the girl's head and grinned at her giggling; Ishida took her advice and went to retrieve her.

9. "I don't like to fight," Orihime confided to Shuuhei, having seen him wander to Tousen's friend's grave and joining him there. "It hurts people. But... if I don't, then more people get hurt, so sometimes you have to."

He glanced down at her with a faint smile. "I think Tousen-taichou would have liked you, Inoue-san."

"Well, then!" She straightened from her kneel and bounced to her feet with a confident smile. "We'll just have to bring him back and then we can see if you're right or not! I wonder if he likes sweet beanpaste..."

What was it about this girl, Shuuhei wondered, that made it hard for anyone around her to be sad?

10. Orihime knew Hitsugaya was concerned about his friend in the infirmary, and often dropped by to converse with the comatose Momo over how happy he would be when she woke up ("He might even stop frowning for ten minutes! You must be really special to him!").

She greatly admires Matsumoto Rangiku, but decided that she would rather not be her... for while Rangiku was beautiful, talented, intelligent, kind and an excellent fighter, there was a sorrow lurking about her that made Orihime hope she'd never come across that type of pain.

11. Ikkaku agreed to teach Orihime his Luck-Luck dance, much to Yumichika's horror. The two seats soon became involved in an argument over whether the dance was beautiful enough to pass around, and that escalated into a giant brawl with everyone in the 11th Division joining in until Yachiru tugged Orihime away to play tag.

Ikkaku taught her on the last day before they left, anyway, although he asked her to please not tell Yumichika or he wouldn't be able to see out of either eye.

12. Kurotsuchi Nemu was vaguely surprised when Orihime came hurrying towards her, intercepting her on the way back to her division. She was even more surprised when the girl seized her hands in hers, leaned forward and earnestly thanked her for saving Ishida's life.

She never found out how Orihime knew about the antidote to the poison and Unohana refused to say anything about it, but being thanked so effusively so startled her that she was in a daze for the rest of the day.

13. Orihime was completely determined to heal Ukitake, even though he told her more than once that it was more of a sickness and not an actual injury. Shunou and Ayame didn't work when she tried that method. That only made her even more determined, and she spent a good six hours concocting some strange curative soup that contained watermelon, orange juice, potatoes, chicken and a whole slew of things that could have made a Menos Grande's stomach churn.

Thankfully, Rukia stopped her before she could cram it down his throat, or the 13th Division might have needed a new captain.

14. Truthfully, when Orihime found out about Jiroubou being Jidanbou's little brother, she was relieved that Ishida hadn't killed him. She knew all too well the pain of losing a sibling, and she didn't want his death to be on the hands of someone who had also had someone important in his life taken away from him.

15. She actually got a chance to speak with Jiroubou when she was assisting Unohana and entered his room to replenish the sheets. She found him seated on the bed in plain robes, his head in his hands and mourning the loss of his shinigami powers.

"Have you come here to witness my regret?" He asked her bitterly, recognizing her immediately.

Orihime shook her head, moving past him to a cabinet where she could stack the sheets. "There's nothing to regret when you're still alive to make something out of it," she replied softly. "I just wish you both could understand there is more to life than just your powers."

She was gone before Jiroubou could inquire about the "both" part of her statement.

16. It's not the fact that he wanted to cut her open and examine her powers that makes Orihime unable to forgive Kurotsuchi Mayuri. No, it's the simple fact that he willingly sacrificed actual human beings to try and destroy her and Ishida, disregarding their lives for his own gain. It's the fact that he taunted Ishida with someone that made him lose his control and his powers. It's the fact that he simply doesn't care.

Orihime can't forgive someone who dismisses life so casually. Can't and won't.

17. Orihime is privately horrified that she can remember how many nose hairs Umesada Toshimori had, because that meant he was FAR TOO CLOSE to her face and she might have blown her cover if Ishida hadn't stepped in.

She studies Ishida's nose that night as he sleeps and is very relieved that she can't count his nose hairs, no matter how close she gets to his face.

18. She actually ran into the woman whom she had attacked and "borrowed" her clothes from, emerging from the infirmary.

For a moment, the two stared at each other, the woman growing steadily paler. Finally, Orihime laughed nervously and promised she would return her clothes to her once she had washed them.

She thought the response of "Just stay the hell away from me!" was rather rude.

19. "The ryoka woman has been assisting the 4th Division more often, which means I can gaze upon her sweet face and hear her gentle voice every day. Oh, how my heart thrills to see her, and how I long to run my trembling fingers through that flowing auburn hair and take her in my arms and passionately--"

"... The Fourth Division is very grateful for your services, I'm sure, but I think you should rest now and take the day off from visiting them tomorrow," Ishida said very quickly, tugging a surprised-looking Orihime after him while Iemura lamented that, once again, he had been speaking out loud.

20. Orihime doesn't understand the point of Byakuya's kenseikan, although they are a constant source of fascination to her. Her current theory is that they somehow transmit messages to the aliens, and they control him from their hideout on the fifth moon of Jupiter. It would certainly explain why he suddenly became a lot nicer when they were out of his hair.

She told Renji to make sure he tossed them into the pond at the next opportunity, before the dreaded artifacts could return to poisoning Byakuya's mind again.

He has half a mind to do it.

gotei-13, inoue orihime
