But when he raises his hand, the world suddenly stops, as if frozen in time. He immediately turns towards Charles, but Charles too is frozen, and a voice comes out of nowhere, loud and shrill and practically piercing his ears.
“What what WHAT are you doing?!”
A man wearing a ridiculously tight pair of jeans and a horrendously tacky orange scarf emerges from the trees, stomping his way over to the group. Erik has never seen this man before, but judging from the tone in his voice, he has a bone to pick with Erik. “Who are you?”
“Where do I even begin with you!” the man retorts back, completely ignoring the question and sashaying right up to Erik. “I would tell you to look at your life, look at your choices, but we are so clearly beyond that point! So let’s just start with put the hand down and back away slowly from the gun, hmm?”
“She’s one of them!” Erik snaps, unwilling to stand down. “She’s going to betray us!”
“Oh my God, seriously?” Erik has never in his life been spoken to this way, and if he wasn’t so bewildered, he would have reached out and choked this man with that scarf. “Look, we all get it, okay? We know you’re all sad and tortured! We’ve seen the manly tears, which-“ At that, the man leans forward, grins and gently slaps Erik’s wrist in solitary. “Good for you! Using all that epic man pain to get in his pants! Brilliant!” But the smile on his face falls and he’s back to admonishing Erik. “But that does not mean that you have to go all kamikaze and get your boyfriend SHOT IN THE SPINE!”
Outraged at the thought, Erik clenches his hands in fists, shaking his head. “I would never hurt Charles, never-“
“HELLO?!” The man is waving his hands frantically in the air, his eyes so wide they’re about to pop out of his head. “Where do you think the bullets are going to go, just magically disappear?! No, they’re going to flying through the air and they’ll hit your boyfriend and I cannot believe we are having this conversation! I mean, do you really want this fine piece of ass to be paralyzed?” He gestures at Charles, and it takes Erik everything he has not to snap the man’s neck at the way he’s staring Charles up and down like a piece of meat. “Mmm. I bet that big brain of his is a turn-on, isn’t it?”
Charles is blushing, but Erik has to admit, that yes, Charles’ intelligence is a huge turn-on. And now that he’s had a moment to stop and think, he realizes that this man despite his flamboyant dress and his audacity at speaking to Erik this way is right. He wouldn’t be able to forgive himself if a stray bullet hits Charles, so he lifts his hand, knocking the gun out of Moira’s hand.
“Oh thank God.” Erik turns to look at the man, who’s breathing a sigh of relief. “Wasn’t sure if you were going to listen, because whoo, you are the king of Bad Life Choices.” He smiles at that, gesturing with his hands for Charles and Erik. “Go on, you two! Make out already! Just be careful not to get any sand in any uncomfortable places!”
And as Erik steps over to Charles to do exactly that, he can hear the man mutter to himself, “You stupid bitches!”
