intro to an essay about closer--that i didnt even have to write-but could be used for future reference

The greatest irony in Closer is committed by its youngest, most seemingly naive character. Jane Jones, played by Natalie Portman, is the only character in the film who did not directly cheat on or lie to a lover, and yet she lied about her identity from the moment the film began. “She was disarming” Jude Law’s character, Dan Wolfe, declared as her descriptive euphemism, just after their initial meeting. Disarming, she was indeed, she kept all the characters right where she wanted them throughout the film through her complex web of lies and deception. But, if ever or whenever she did not have the upperhand, it was Jane who fled the situation. “ I am the one who leaves, I am supposed to leave you” she cried when Dan confessed to cheating. Obvious beauty, with a facade of resiliance, mask an extremely vulnerable core to the multilayered, multifaceted Jane Jones.
