Melanie stood in the doorway of Scarlett's room with a concerned look on her face, making Scarlett wish that she hadn't gotten so emotional at the mention of Ashley's name.

Scarlett often wondered what life with Ashley would be like, but she was having a hard time masking her true thoughts from Rhett and Melanie.

"Don't worry about Ashley," Scarlett said, more to herself than to Melanie, "he'll be okay, he just has to be!"

"It was just a whimsy fantasy," Scarlett said sadly about the dream she had, "But it seemed so real."

"Why Scarlett!" Melanie exclaimed, lifting the top off a box, "you're such a dear, you didn't have to get me anything!"

"We're safe," Scarlett said when the horse reached Tara, "it's a blessing from God that we're safe!"

"And that Rhett," Scarlett started, "he's biased to every idea I've come up with!"

Scarlett cried onto Melanie's shoulder, "I don't want them to burn Tara down!"

Scarlett checked in on Melanie to see if she was fine; she was breathing deeply as she slept.

"Oh, my heart should break if you say anything bad now, Melly!" Scarlett moaned.

She knew that Scarlett didn't, but Melanie believed that Rhett loved her (Scarlett).

"No, Ella," Scarlett said, "there are no more balloons; you and Wade popped them all yesterday, so stop bothering me!"

As she was leading Melanie through a tour of her house, Scarlett stared into her bedroom and thought, I told Rhett I wanted a balcony in here!

Scarlett watched as Melanie helped Aunt Pitty pick up the kitchen thinking, Why must she be such a bane?

"You're curiously quiet today," Melanie said to a solemn Scarlett, "is everything alright?"

"You have such strange quirks about you," Melanie commented to Scarlett, watching her friend pull the curtains down from where they were hanging.
