510, Monday morning, decorating time

Feb 19, 2007 21:10

Buffy was awake. She'd fed Berthold, and made sure her roses were hanging properly. Now she was sitting on the floor, surrounded by sharp weaponry.

"Hey, River?" She held up something like a bendy serrated sword. "Do you think that'll look good over by the bats?"

River tilted her head thoughtfully. "Yes, with that one next to it." She pointed at another one of the reaver knives, a thin blade with a jagged edge.

Buffy nodded approvingly. "That works. Where should we put the weetiny scythes?" She held up one where the blade was about the size of her hand.

"Definitely together," River said. "But this way," she gestured with her hands, "or that?"

Pointing at another irregular shaped blade she asked: "Min if I give that one to Jack? I promised him one for his birthday, in addition to the harpoon."

"Hmmm." Buffy studied the wall, then repeated River's second gesture. "Like that, I think."

She glanced towards the blade. "Oh not at all. The other guys should get some shinies too, since they helped."

River nodded thoughtfully. "I think you're right."

"And we could save some of them as presents. Don't think Blair will want one though." Unconciously her face took on a worried expression, but it faded when she picked up a large spiky knife. "This one should go above those, I think."

"Ooh, that'll be pretty," Buffy agreed. She picked up what looked like half a morningstar. "Could I put this over by my closet?"

She looked down at the two piles in front of her, one for the room and one still undecided. "We should probably take those we don't hang up to the weapons locker, even if we're going to give them away."

River nodded. "I hope no one objects to using them as decorations." Images came up in her head on how in the event of attack these decorations could quickly be turned back into weapons.

She picked up the hammer and some nails. "Time to start putting them up?"

Buffy nodded back. "You hammer, I guide?"

River nodded and pulled a chair up to the wall. That wasn't quite high enough, so she placed a pile of Cosmo's on the chair, and stood on top. "Here?" she asked over her shoulder, stretching as far as she could reach.

"Looks good!" Buffy said cheerfully, giving her Cosmos a slightly worried look. They seemed safe so far though. "Maybe a little to the left?"

River stretched a little to the left. It was a good thing she had a good balance. She hammered the nail in and extended her hand. "Knife, please."

Buffy picked up the knife and walked over to River to hand it to her. "It's gonna look awesome when we're done."

"It will," River agreed.

It didn't take them too long to get all the knives up, but then came the fine-tuning of the exact angles. Finally, River took a step back.

"You think we're done?"

Buffy considered it, head tilted to one side. Then she went to find one of her pins from New Duinsmuir and added it to one of the jagged blades so it ended up decorated by a flower. "There! Now we're done."

River laughed. Turning the knives into wall decorations felt a lot better than hse had anticipated. And Buffy's final touch was just - perfect.
