OK, so I can't even remember the last time I updated, but I'm sure about a bijillion things have happened since then, so I'm just gonna start with somewhat recent stuff.
I got my EMT license back in June and am running with Lynchburg Life Saving Crew and am loving it. I have some great friends there who are already like second family to me. I also now am certified to drive the ambulance, so watch out if you see Medic 9, I might be the one driving :oP My first duty I was freaking out because I was so nervous, but I feel pretty comfortable in the back of the ambulance, like I actually know what I'm doing. I'm on probation, which just means that until I learn the ways of the crew and am full comfortable being on my own in the back of the rig, I have to pull duty with 2 senior members, one of whom has to be in the back with me. I don't mind it, because it's a good way to learn from those who are more experienced, and I'm learning a lot. I've also learned that it's a lot of fun to go to Sheetz and Kroger at 11:00 at night, and it's fun to pull duty with Todd and Daryl. The 3 of us usually pull overnight duty on Saturdays and it's become tradition to go to Sheetz and Kroger for ice cream :oP The last time we pulled, Daryl was singing to his heavy metal cd's and then he & Todd starting singing "I've Got a Lovely Bunch of Coconuts" from the Lion King. I thought I was gonna fall off my seat I was laughing so hard. It's an interesting thing, being on this side of things. I've seen people at their sickest times, and I've even had someone take their last breath in my presence. It makes you think. I'm proud as hell to do this and volunteer my time. Yeah, we don't get a ton of respect or credit, but that doesn't matter to me. The day that I stop looking foward to getting on that ambulance is the day that I get out of EMS. I know that sounds like I'm on my soapbox, but I've wanted to be in EMS for so long and now I'm able to do it and help people, that's just one of the greatest feelings in the world, to me.
On a somewhat related note, Nursing school is going well, Junior year baby! I've been on my OB rotation, so I've been spending time working on Labor/Delivery and Mother-Baby units for clinicals. I got to see a birth my very first clinical and I've had some great patients. I don't feel like a CNA this time, like I did on clinicals last year, when all we did was give baths. We were pretty much even the CNA's bitches. Lol. Now I'm starting to feel like a real nurse. On Mother-Baby, we are pretty much taking care of the mom and baby on our own, even giving meds by ourself. We do assessments on the mom and the baby and we chart it and anything else that we do. We then give report to the primary nurse. It's pretty awesome. On Labor/Delivery, we are co-assigned with an RN and we do whatever they will let us do, which is usually the assessment on the baby right after it is born, and we will usually give the baby its first bath, and on my first L/D clinical, I got to give the baby his first feeding (by bottle). It was the coolest thing. The teachers are pretty awesome as well. The only downside is that our class as a whole is split up into 3 different sections- Med-Surg, Psych, and OB. We won't all be together again until next year. An upside is that myself and 4 of my closest friends are together, so that's pretty cool.
Well, I had a whole bunch of stuff I was gonna say and now I can't remember any of it. Haha, my old age must be getting to me :oP I guess I can always slap up another update if I remember anything. Catch y'all later.
