#59: In Love Again

Hi, first-time recapper here! It’s like the first day at school, I’m all nervous. Since my mother threw out my old SVH collection, I’m going to make do with whatever I can find in the charity shops. So far I’ve found... well, this one. Bear with me, it’s stupidly long. I don’t have the art of concise recapping down yet ( Read more... )

So the Dominique ANTM, was that this season where she looked like a bad tranny from Transylvania. Where poor Michelle came from also?

Glad I didn't read the book. I don't think my head would have made it. Because, seriously, Lizzy makes me wanna hit things...with a broken beer bottle. As for the bowl thing, it's like a scholastic competition. Tada! Mostly the geeky people were on it. Not the popular ones. I know this as my friends in high school were on it.

Oh yes, definitely this season's mad tranny Dominique. Couldn't stand her.

Liz makes me want to hit things too - I'm on the lookout for non-Liz books to restore my brain a little!

I didn't watch it really because they're dragging the bottom of the barrel at this point. They all look like old contestants at this point. Though, I was glad Whitney won. Simply because she wasn't a size two. Toccara should have had that, though.

I don't know of any SVH that aren't centered around Little Miss Sunshine. Even Crazy Margo wanted to be her. Oh, you could look for Lila's story. Lizzy ain't her friend. Might have to deal with Amy Sutton, though.

Is it necessary to use the expression "tranny"? I've always heard it used in a terribly derogatory/transphobic fashion, or am I missing some context here?

Actually, it's the term used to describe her on the show, when the panel was talking.

Wow, really? We're a couple of seasons behind here.

Also, is "tranny" really an acceptable term on TV in the UK/the States? There's no sort of negative public response to it? That surprises me a little.

Yeah, they called her a "beautiful tranny" two episodes ago. Nobody really seems to object to it; I don't think either of our countries have progressed that far. Where are you?

Heh. India. Where being gay is still illegal (not gay marriage. being gay) so I'm not really in a great position to talk about progressive politics. But I do try to steer clear of transphobic language, for the same reasons I avoid using sexist, racist and homophobic language. Obviously no country has progressed far enough. :(

I think maybe ANTM can get away with it more than other shows because of Miss J. There's still this assumption that as long as one member of a minority isn't offended by it, nobody can be offended by it (debate about Miss J being trans aside for the moment). I try not to use such terms, but "delusional" and "tranny" are about the only two distinguishers Dominique had on the show. Also, I think I spend too much time on Television Without Pity, where it's rampant. Sigh.

Where I live, "tranny" is positive, awesome, and a compliment.

Of course, I live in West Hollywood, so that should 'splain everything!

Honestly, I'm not sure on the accept. I don't think it's a compliment, either. But it was the only word I heard repeatedly on the two or three episodes snippets I catched this season to describe her pictures. Very much like Michelle from S4 was described as a drag queen.

Dominique's season just wrapped up on Wednesday, so you're not that behind.

I remember Michelle. I was unhappy about the drag queen descriptions as well (see my reply to miss_hellfire above). I should just stop watching TV.

I usually try not to use them, but it's the only qualifier to put some names with faces really. Because they've had quite a few repeats of normal names. It's unfortunate, too.
